So not a weird version I am sure when it was played, but now listening to shows from this time in 1981, one that stands out to me is Juice Newton's "The Sweetest Thing". Not listening to the show back then, I would first hear the song in like 1991. And every time I have heard it in "real time", the version I hear is less oriented to country music. For example, the steel guitar is deep in the background and there is more of a symphonic buildup during the bridge and chorus. Were there two different single versions then or does anyone know if the more symphonic single was a single on the 81 album or subsequent albums?

woolebull, I thought the 'country' version was the original early 1981 album version, while the string 'pop' version was the 7'' single released in late 1981.

Both 1/26 and 2/2/91 have different remixes of Janet Jackson's "Love Will Never Do (Without You)". (The former is also the Star Trek show.) A double-check of both shows reveals that the two are not the same, which makes this all the more interesting. The remix on 2/2 also seems to still use elements of the original instrumental, including the song's opening. While February 2 has The Love 7" version: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyMgJLUOy7oTurns out, January 5 has this same version as well. Also on 1/5/91: Not so much an "odd version", rather just not the one that usually got played - Winger's "Miles Away" gets its album version played, which contains an extra chorus after the third and final verse (normally you'd just hear one chorus at the end, instead there's two).

Here's one of these that's not quite a full song. And what a week to do it on, eh? On 7/9/94, the Flashback is to 1988, which has "Mercedes Boy" at #2 - only, they use the album version for its clip. Guess what? The instance in 1994 turns out to have been a repeat Flashback - the regular countdown from 7/6/91 also Flashed back to this same 1988 chart, and that Flashback also uses the album version of "Mercedes Boy".

Turns out there's two from 1/26/91. I didn't notice it previously because when I first heard this show, I wasn't too familiar with the song in question, and since then I admittedly haven't listened to this show much. Anyway, the other is Cathy Dennis's "Just Another Dream", which had a specific portion of its 12-inch version played. Using this clip here, it started about 45/50 seconds in, then Shadoe cut in at around 4:15 - www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf0WjjSzbSUIn contrast, it was usually the regular version of the song that would get played. The album version and the 7-inch version are basically the same, with the 7-inch being a tighter edit of the album version (about 30 seconds shorter). This was also played on 1/12 (the Nelson show).

12/18/99: They play the H&H Mix of Filter's "Take a Picture". It's subtle, but the key difference is right at the beginning. Both the original song (which is 6 minutes long) and its regular radio edit start with strumming guitar. The H&H Mix, however, starts with a bit of a haunting tone. It also seems to lean on keeping a steady tempo compared to its regular edit (or as heard in the video).

For the 3rd. AT40: The 70's 10/30/1976 OPTIONAL EXTRA of "Car Wash" by Rose Royce, the long album version was played. I wonder how they managed to do that. I thought they only had like 3 minutes or not much more than that for the optional extras. Btw, the last 1977 show was one of a few shows with that version played.

Is the 3/15/1986 the only show where we hear the version of Rock Me Amadeus without the story of Mozart at the beginning?

Actually, that one was a hybrid mix, IIRC. I believe that they also played the German version on the March 8 show. Other than that, I think they went with the chronology version.

I've noticed that AT40 played a Club Mix version of OMD's "Dreaming". They also played a Club Mix version of Giant Steps' "Another Lover" later on in 1988 in the early stages of "The Shadoe Era" I listened to the 4/30/1988 countdown again and compared to the Club Mix of "Dreaming" found on YouTube. They are different. Does anyone know the name of the version that AT40 always played?

Madonna's "Keep it Together". Now, that's a fun one. ... Now, on 4/13/91, it's that week's LDD. And it has a third version played that week - that one's "officially" designated as its Single Remix. The designation matters for this song, because it has: its album version, a 7" remix, a 12" Mix, a 12" Remix, and a Single Remix - and every one of those has at least one element that distinctly identifies it from all the others. This version was also played on 4/7/90.
