Call it the Execration of Gordon Elliott. This week in 1980 he called debuting (or as he said it debooing) Doobies one of the hottest rock bands in the world. They would soon break up and it would be nine long years before they would reunite and visit The Doctor for one last top tenner.

Would this count as a jinx?:
On the AT40 shows of 9/4/1976 and (via a question letter) 1/19/1985, Casey mentioned the Browns were the only country group to hit #1 on Billboard's pop charts with "The Three Bells", but years later in 2000 in the second Casey AT40 era I guess country group Lonestar made it to #1 CHR/Pop with "Amazed".

Debooing sounds like something the defenders of Michael McDonald were doing after he was booed for being the "With A Little Help From" guy on about 2/3 of 1979 and 1980 hits. He isn't too obvious on Pop Muzik and The Rose but he's there somewhere. I heard that he tried to horn in on Billy & Syreeta and Neil & Dara, too, but they were like it's okay we got this Mike.

Casey said on 9/13/86 that Elton John was the star who made eyeglasses a fad, "and hit songs a habit". But Elt's next album, Leather Jackets, did not spin off a single top 40 hit (his next single after this countdown, "Heartache All Over the World", only hit #55). Elt himself later denounced it as a low point creatively, but at least it didn't have any hits that he might have felt obliged to revisit in concert, and he later rebounded both commercially and creatively.

"Leather Jackets" was his 'contractual obligation' final album for Geffen Records, which is probably why it was 'phoned in', to use the phrase for not really caring.

A year later in 1987 Elton John was back at MCA, but he was on the Epic label for a duet with Jennifer Rush.

On the 9/7/74 show Casey reverse jinxed Andy Kim saying it looked like he was headed for a #1 record.

On last week's '76 Casey jinxed #2 You'll Never Find by saying Lou Rawls couldn't wait to see the charts for the next week.

On September 13, 1975 Casey said that "Run Joey Run" by David Geddes was "charting like a #1" due to its fast move up the chart until then. I'm sure everyone here is sorely disappointed that it wasn't that, peaking at #4 (the following week Casey noted that it was starting to slow.)

In the September 4, 1971 show, Casey said that Olivia Newton-John’s first top 40 hit, “If Not For You”, was the slowest climbing song ever in the countdown’s history (14 months at that point), pointing out that it had been on AT40 for eight weeks and was only at #25, and that was without ever slipping back or staying in the same place.
That seems like a jinx in that the song went no higher on the chart (though Olivia of course did many times later). The following week this streak ended as it fell to #29, then to #32 and off.

In a Supersized 1975 reverse jinx, Casey said it looked like I'm Sorry would top the next panel for John Denver.

On the 9/15/79 show Casey claimed you have to tour to sell records, but not Gerry Rafferty. He'd never reach the Top 40 again.
