WHNN is airing the 7/31/1976 show this week: Optional extras are: "Still The One" - Orleans "One" - Three Dog Night (original AT40 extra; nobody thought about that?!?) "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" - Blue Oyster Cult Jdelach, I predicted Three Dog Night's "One" as an optional extra.

As to Too Shy, I went to youtube and checked out the 8 minute 12" version. Dukedeb, you should send that link to Hervard. He'll probably last 2 seconds before he closes the link.

I don't know what show is going to be played so I am not trying to throw anybody off. But last year 3 of the 5 1970 shows played were played on dates that correpsonded with the chart date. And one of those such shows was the 8/8/70 chart date show. So that would eliminate 1970 from consideration much to the chagrin of some people I'm sure...lol. Unless they go with the broadcast dated show which is the 8/15/70 chart date. I'll let you guys do the guessing. Ah no one wants to guess so I will say it is a week in which the Bee Gees hit #1. Actually that sounds likes a clue....lol Well, I was going to suggest looking at Cash Box charts for the potential matching weeks of AT40's program for the August 6-7 weekend. But that would require a little work. (And it's really too hot!) So I'll just tell you that, surprisingly, there were five songs on the Cash Box Top 40 chart dated August 1, 1970 that never reached Billboard's Top 40. And that's the chart date we get next weekend. Guessed that show last week! Week late!

Heard last week on '73 countdown.

Guessed that show last week! Week late! So Pete, you basically gave it away. Based on that, there would seem to be some large disparities between Cashbox and Billboard. Not sure what to make of that except that you would hear some songs that you are not familiar with. I am not familiar with any of those songs which did not make Billboard's top 40. And I spoke too soon when I wrote the other day that neither network had played the show for 8/1/70, the 4th show in AT40 history. I just checked out that link and have deduced that soul was given a stronger representation on the Cashbox chart. 3 of the 5 songs that made the Cbox top 40 but did not in Bbd were soul. Plus not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 soul songs which stalled at 3 or 4 in Bbd made it all the way to #1 in Cbox during this time frame....Ball of Confusion, Signed Sealed Delivered, Spill the Wine and Patches.

OK so I really need to discontinue the practice of saying which shows WON'T be played next week. Was wrong on the 80's show for this weekend and now the 70's show for next weekend (though I did say that 8/8/70 won't be played, so guess I wasn't totally off).
So the first 1970 show of 2011 it is...thanks Pete!

I mean to go from a show dated 7/31 to a show dated 8/1.....did someone think there were like 35 days in July? I don't get it.

Just curious, sorry if this question has been answered before. What was the major difference between Billboard and Cashbox surveys? Was it different radio stations, different music stores, locations, etc?

For history buffs, if it were the show from August 10, 1974, it would be the day after President Nixon's resignation...not sure that would factor into Premiere's decision, but a fun fact to chew on. Another, related fun fact: that was the last week in the top 40 for Lamont Dozier's "Fish Ain't Bitin", with the lines "Tricky Dick, please quit" and "Tricky Dick, stop your sh*t".

Will let you figure out which song that is..............

(In addition, I can think of at least two other songs that name-drop Nixon that hit after he left office; David Bowie's "Young Americans" and Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire".)

mkarns, you know your stuff don't you. More so than Casey maybe. He has misidentified 2 songs as being from 1975 on this show. First when he said the Ohio Players had 3 big hits last year including the #1 hit Love Rollercoaster. And then when he said Barry Manilow and Eric Carmen had top 10 hits in 1975 with songs adapted from classical pieces. In this case, Carmen's classically adapted hit was All By Myself which along with Love Rollercoaster both hit earlier in 1976.

I'm trying to remember if AT40 ever played the more orchestral version of I'm Easy. I seem to recall hearing both versions when the song first came out, but I'm not entirely sure.

Casey is good despite his mistakes...lol He seems to know what is going to hit #1 many times and now it seems that he knew who was going to be president! So a Jimmy Carter reference this week and a Richard Nixon mention in a song next week. Where's Gerald Ford...lol
Back to making mistakes? How can Joan Weber be the greatest disappearing act of all time? Is this some kind of subjective determination based on how they disappeared? It is a compelling story of her disappearing but basing something on subjective criteria is questionable IMO.
