The “big station in Chicago” that Casey referenced when introducing “Lady” by Styx was WLS. He was unable to specifically provide the call letters because AT40 was heard at the time on WDHF-FM, a Top 40 competitor to WLS. Credit for breaking “Lady” was also due to at least one of Chicago’s rock stations, WBBM-FM, which originally added “Lady” to their playlist in May 1973 and, after its original run, continued to play it as a ‘non-current.’ And how did "Lady" fair on WLS rival WCFL Chicago?

Think I told this story before: Wooden Nickel records was trying to get airplay for Styx latest single to be put into rotation on WLS-AM, a cover of the mid-60s #20 hit "Lies" originally sung by the Knickerbockers. The station turned them down, but promised they would play "Lady" each night at 8 PM for a couple of weeks. John Records Landecker had just joined WLS, and the hope was the strong signal at night would help the 1973 recording become a hit. It could also be a good PR move for Landecker.

Before the 1975 show gets too far in the rear view mirror, check this out. Someone posted a YouTube video with this title...This 70s top 10 Will Make You Wonder What the Hell Happened to Music. It was the top 10 from 2 weeks prior, on 2/15/75. 9 of the 10 artists placed in the top 500 artists of the rock era as shown in the latest Record Research Pop Singles book. AWB was the only one not listed there but they have their own mark as being a white band with big R&B hits. They along with Grand Funk, the Ohio Players and America are the only ones not in the R&R Hall of Fame.

Spending a snowy weekend working on upcoming Supersized countdowns. It's a 1978 show so its full version is really long. 4 hour shows were WAY overdue at that time. Music to my ears.... my unofficial record indicates everything thru 2/18 has already been aired Supersized and I think 2/25 was featured in 2023 as a "B" so I'll go with 3/4/78 This weekend's show is from March 4, 1978.

How do you survive there? Listening to 1971 and it sounded like it was just dumping on Watertown. Out here in the Desert SW folks are complaining because this week will finally be the first upper 60s since mid Nov. If we get 2" of slush it is the end of the world. They might have to close the screwols for the entire week. Yeah, the North Country isn't for the faint of heart. While this is a lake effect snow storm, it's not as bad as I've seen them. The one in January was way worse. Still, it's a good thing it's happening on a Sunday and the day before a holiday so I won't have to worry about getting up Monday morning for school closings! I just read that Raleigh-Durham has just had its first ever winter without even a trace of snow. Record keeping started in 1887 so that's nearly 140 years in the making. This week's show is from a year with a lot of snowfall in many places that winter.

That is crazy to think about. I live just north of there and almost had that same distinction; we had a dusting a while back but that is all. The winters here are really nice. After 31 years in the North Star State, it's been a nice change. I was born in an area that didn't have much of a change of seasons. And I can say I didn't see any snow where I was back in 1978. 🙂
So much for an El Nino winter...thought it would be a little different for the Mid-Atlantic region.

We’ve had about 10 inches total in Washington/Baltimore. Which isn’t huge, but better (or worse) than last year when we had nearly nothing, and probably more than the preceding couple of years. The February 1983 show we heard a couple of weeks ago was a week after a massive blizzard that I remember, and Sirius XM played a February 1979 countdown from the day my brother was born which was less than a week after another huge snowstorm. (I was born in September 1975 which isn’t in snow season but is in hurricane season, and Hurricane Eloise blew through a few days after I was first taken home.)

I think this is a quiz for people that have Pete's books. Answer: 16 on 4/21/79.

Wikipedia is not necessarily the authority on this but looking up the individual songs there in which the genre is listed reveals 18 disco songs. It's easier to list the chart positions of the 18...1,2,3,8,9,11,12,13,14,15,16,23,24,27,28,30,37 and 40. LC came up with 19. I would guess that "Superman" is the 19th. Casey was probably going by how many had hit the disco chart.
