On this past weekend's 5/21/77 show "Gonna Fly Now" AKA "Theme From Rocky", well, flew up 14 notches from 21 to 7. It then moved up 1 notch every subsequent week until finally fulfilling Casey's prediction that it would hit #1---the week that AT40 aired the Girls Of Rock And Roll special.
Also, the third hour of 5/21/77 started at #12. That's probably the latest in the countdown the third hour ever started. The Vincent extra originally appearing in Hour 3 and the long version of Hotel California being played were the reasons. By contrast 5/27/72's third hour started at #15 on the original show, (as rgmike mentioned upthread Day Dreaming was moved to Hour Two by Premiere) which probably didn't happen too often. In this case it was the aforementioned Taxi and the aforementioned Vincent being in Hour 2 that caused the imbalance.

Also, the third hour of 5/21/77 started at #12. That's probably the latest in the countdown the third hour ever started. During the 3-hour era, there was at least one 'special' exception, Hour #3 of the 1973 Christmas Countdown started with #10. And of course, once 4-hour shows began, Hour #4 often started at #10.

Nasty weather in the western Carolinas this afternoon/evening. Just heard a NWS alert on WQSL.
(update) I guess the weather has quieted. No weather warnings since the start of the show.

The lead off song on the countdown from 5/29/76 was "Still Crazy After All These Years" by Paul Simon-Simon was the guest host on "Saturday Night Live" the evening of 11/20/76-Since it was the weekend before Thanksgiving,Simon was in a turkey costume-He then proceeded to sing "Still Crazy"-After a few seconds,he exited the stage & proceeded to get into an argument with "SNL" producer Lorne Michaels-I believe that clip can be viewed on You Tube.

Conflicting birth dates for him: 2/17/25 (Wikipedia) or 8 years later, 2/17/33 (Whitburn). Wasn't paying close attention, but I think Casey went with the '33 date.

Just checked my copy of "Rock On:The Solid Gold Years" by Norm N.Nite-Nite also lists 2/17/33 as Lewis' birth date.

Assuming that 2/17/33 is the correct birth date,Bobby Lewis would've been 87 when he passed away in April 2020.

Just checked my copy of "Rock On:The Solid Gold Years" by Norm N.Nite-Nite also lists 2/17/33 as Lewis' birth date. My hunch is that the '25 date is correct but that either Lewis or his record company shaved 8 years off his age on his bio around the time of "Tossin' and Turnin'" since otherwise he would seem too old to be a 'rock'n'roller'.

I wonder if "One Piece at a Time" was the inspiration for The Shawshank Redemption, one of my fave movies. Fun factoid, Johnny Cash and Elvis that were back to back in this countdown were first back to back in the top 40 in November 1956. In fact, they were closer than that. There were ties on the chart back then and they were both at #19 one week with "I Walk the Line" and "Hound Dog", respectively.

Speaking of conflicting birth dates, in the very first AT40 Casey wished a happy birthday to Louis Armstrong and played "Hello, Dolly!" as an extra. At the time Armstrong was thought to have been born on July 4, 1900 (Louis always said so), but baptismal records later revealed his actual birthdate to be over a year later (August 4, 1901). This didn't become known until the mid-1980s, though, so Casey and Don Bustany (who wrote that and other early shows) were simply going by what was known and commonly accepted in 1970.

Early word on the Memorial Day weekend shows: we have three offerings for each decade, only one of which is a regular weekly show for each. The regular show: May 29, 1976.Optional extras: Hour #1: "Casey talks about 'Waltzing Matilda' by Jimmie Rodgers" (that's what it says on the cue sheet) Hour #2: "Tossin' And Turnin'" - Bobby Lewis (original AT40 extra) Hour #3: "The Twist" - Chubby Checker (original AT40 extra) The "Waltzing Matilda" story appeared in the original show between #37 and 38. I guess if it's an optional extra the whole song gets played as well? Special: The first installment of #1 Hits of the 70s, as Ken Martin constructed it, now appearing in three hour installments instead of four hour ones. Optional extras: Hour #1: "What's Going On" - Marvin Gaye Hour #2: "We've Only Just Begun" - The Carpenters Hour #3: "Never Can Say Goodbye" - The Jackson Five And as a further bonus...AT40 from May 23, 1998. (Memorial Day weekend that year.) Optional extras: Hour #1: "Closing Time" - Semisonic Hour #2: "You Mean The World To Me" - Toni Braxton (America's Top Hits) Hour #3: "Give Me One Reason" - Tracy Chapman (America's Top Hits) Hour #4: "The Boy Is Mine" - Brandy & Monica Who has these extra shows this weekend? I don't see the usual schedule on WPNC or TOJ's website this time. I do see the WXHC will air some of the specials: www.wxhc.com/at-40-specials/Any others?
