The song in question was by John Bahler. It peaked at #20 on the AC Chart in June, 1971 I wanted to mention Bahler's name in my post, but I forgot his name. Thanks for mentioning it. It was one of those songs that became an earworm for me--it had lyrics appropriate for this time of year, so for years I thought it was out during the month of May. Fifty years ago at this time, I was still listening to the station my parents listened to--i would begin to listen to top-40 radio about a year later. John Bahler and his brother Tom were part of the Ron Hicklin singers. They did backround vocals on a boatload of hits in the 60's and 70's and worked mainly with the Wrecking Crew session musicians. John is married to Janet Lennon of the Lennon Sisters and Tom is also known for writing She's Out Of My Life by Michael Jackson.

What's up with Premiere not playing the theme from "Shaft"?-Is it because listeners would cringe when they hear Isaac Hayes utter a certain obscenity? Nope. That's a Premiere mistake. The tease will play, but there won't be a payoff. Except of course on WTOJ / Magic 103.1. I'm gonna play that in the optional position during the first hour.

Ken,was the first optional extra "Theme From Shaft" voiced by Casey? Yes. I spoke with Toby Petty and it was a mystery to him as to why it was removed and not put into the optional position when it aired previously.

One more thing about this '77 show. Leo Sayer's "When I Need You" was the LP version. You can tell because there is no sax in the instrumental bridge. I've restored the single version and the saxophone.

So only the WTOJ Supersized version for this 5/14/1977 AT40: The 70's show will get for a bonus OPTIONAL EXTRA the "Theme From Shaft" original AT40 extra.
