In the early-to-mid '80s, it seemed like the vast majority of songs debuting on the Hot 100 did so at #90 or above, and of the relatively few that didn't, most debuted within a few notches of #90. As a result, the vast majority of songs in positions 91-100 from week to week would be droppers; few songs peaked below #90; and songs peaking below #95 or so were almost unheard of. There must have been some aspect of Billboard's chart methodology in this era that made it difficult (not impossible, but unusual) for songs to debut below #90. I have a spreadsheet with the Hot 100 for every week from the beginning of 1979 to the final week of February 1984. I sorted it and counted the number of debuts at #90 or below during that period: 90 - 194 91 - 27 92 - 32 93 - 36 94 - 27 95 - 33 96 - 18 97 - 11 98 - 16 99 - 7 100 - 0 From some quick math, the covered time period is approximately 268 weeks. On more than 70% of those weeks, the song at #90 was a debut. By contrast, the songs in each of the positions between #91 and #95 were debuts on approximately 10-12% of those weeks, each of the numbers below #95 even less.

I can only think of one song from the '80s that peaked below #90, although I'm sure there were others. That song is "(Believed You Were) Lucky" by 'til Tuesday, which peaked at #95 during it's three-week 'Hot 100' run in Jan/Feb of 1989. The only reason I remember that is because that song was and still is one of my all-time favorites.

There were others; one I remember being the hard rock/"hair metal" fan I then was is "Youth Gone Wild" by Skid Row, which "hit" #99 in 1989. Their next two singles, "18 and Life" and "I Remember You" both made the top 10. That same year "That's When I Think of You" by 1927 smashed its way to #100, their only US chart single. It was a top 10 hit in their native Australia.

By 1988-89, whatever methodology had been at work earlier in the decade had ended, and it had become more common for songs to debut (and peak) in the 91-100 range. I don't know exactly when this changed. Besides "That's When I Think Of You", at least one other song peaked at #100 in that time period, "Long Way To Love" by the hair metal band Britny Fox, in 1988.

On AT40: The 70's 4/24/1976: 3 weeks in a row we had a question related to Johnny Mathis' "Wonderful Wonderful" - but is was related to Johnny not holding the record for longest stay on the Billboard Soul/R&B chart since Casey mentioned the record for most weeks on the Billboard Soul/R&B chart goes to Jimmy "The Spon" Witherspon with a song that stayed at #1 on the Soul/R&B chart for 34 weeks.

If I was an artist, I'm not sure I'd want to brag about "hitting the charts" if my song peaked at 100.

I would! It's still an accomplishment, especially when you consider the literal countless number of songs that never even have a chance at hitting any sort of chart.

As Andrea True debuted at #40 on this week's chart, I'm trying to remember if Casey ever actually mentioned that she was a porn star? I do remember a Casey story that referenced her "nightclub act" (nudge-nudge, wink-wink) but I don't remember him actually mentioning that she was a popular star of "adult films".

I'm not totally sure, but I don't think he ever clearly mentioned that phase of her career. If anyone else in AT40 history ever appeared in porn films, that wasn't discussed either.

"More More More" was sampled in the 1999 hit "Steal My Sunshine" by the group Len.

Casey mentioned it at #19 in the Top 40 Disco Hits special on July 7, 1979.

I had that exact same thought yesterday! I don't think he did ever say that Ms. True's 'acting' was of the "Boogie Nights" variety. Just read the last reply--I stand corrected.
