I know it's a bit early but the Christmas holiday falls on the weekend of Dec 24/25 this year. Does that mean many AT 40 stations will be playing Christmas music and many of the station may not run the show? Last year when Christmas was on a saturday, many stations played Christmas music all day or for most of the day instead of running the show. So as the months go by before this special weekend comes up , if anyone has information on which stations are going to run the show please post and let us know.

There's a thread that gets resurrected for this purpose every year. I was only here for it last year, but I noticed the older posts there.

Way to early to predict shows for that particular weekend, but my guess is whatever does get played will be on Sunday (at a "special time").
But as far as the shows go, how about for the 80s package -- and I know I keep getting shot down because it's a Shadoe Stevens show and not Casey-hosted -- Dec. 23, 1989. For the 70s package, we'll go with Dec. 26, 1970 (a repeat from a year ago). Both ends of the spectrum there.

I'd say that the 70's should air one of the two Christmas countdowns (71 or 73). I wish he had done a more updated one in say 86 when things like Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses, Do They Know Its Christmas by Band Aid, Last Christmas by Wham, Thank God Its Christmas by Queen, etc... could be included instead of some of the really old stuff....

statenislandfan, it is always dicey as to which stations will preempt for Christmas music and which ones will play the AT40 shows. It seems to me that the 70's stations were the worst offenders, as I didn't have much trouble getting the 80's shows this past season. Also, some stations start playing Christmas music at Thanksgiving and you will know to cross them off right away, while others won't preempt the Premiere shows until the weekend of Christmas.
As far as predictions for what will be played, not sure yet about the '70s (the the Top 40 of '71 wouldn't surprise me), but for the 80's I would put my money on the Top 100 of '87 based on the pattern of shows played throughout the year so far (and hopefully they do like they did for the '85 show this past year where they play the entire top 100 over two weeks, rather than do a top 50 from two different years like they did at the end of '09). You may hear an AT40 Christmas special mixed in there also.

I'm inclined to think that if you just stay away from the AC stations which air the countdowns, your chances of hearing those countdowns at Christmastime will improve dramatically.
Lots of AC stations go all Christmas before Thanksgiving because it really juices their ratings for several weeks, so rock, Hot AC & Oldies/Classic Hits stations should air the show as usual on 12-23 and 12-24.

The more that I think of it, this thread is not just "What stations are pre-empting their normal programming for all-Christmas 24/7 for a month," but because Dec. 24-25 falls on Saturday and Sunday (the two days of the week when "AT40: The 70s" and "AT40: The 80s"), will Premiere even bother going through the trouble of sending the program out to affiliates?
Besides, Dec. 24-25 are the two days when most, if not all stations tend to air only Christmas-related music ... not just like the AC/oldies stations that flip formats in late November, but ALL stations for those 24-48 hours.
I still say we hear a program, but this year my prediciton is it will be the same program sent out to all affiliates of both "The 70s" and "The 80s" -- the 1973 Christmas special. (It'll be packaged as "a special AT40 Christmas show, which originally aired Dec. 22, 1973").

The outsize effect which flipping to all-Christmas has had on the AC charts for several years is very well documented, since there are almost no non-AC stations which will go all-Christmas on Nov. 1st, or even Dec. 1st; most stations which have tried to pursue those juiced ratings which many AC stations enjoy come Christmas by emulating their AC competitors wind up suffering disastrously in the ratings, and elienating their listeners big time.
No Hot AC, Rock, Oldies/Classic Hits or Adult Hits station is going to play around the clock Christmas music 4-8 weeks before Christmas, and that's no secret.
The challenge for them is programming against the overhwhelming majority of AC stations which do, and being ready to resume normal competition when most radio stations out there return to normal programming sometime on Christmas Day.

marv, you are the authority on ratings and formats, etc. Glad you put the hip-hop/rap clowns in their place with your analysis of the changes in the late 80s and 90s. But what is the demographic that is making AC Christmas so hot? I was hoping that most people on this planet are sick of Christmas music when it airs for 2 months out of the year.

Actually, quite a few of the stations that flip are Oldies/Classic Hits. Even some Hot AC's that tend to lean more gold/soft have been known to flip.

Brian I don't see them going out-of-decade for The 80s, but this certainly would be the year to cater to Christmas. For the 80s, unless 12-24 turns out to be Part 1 of a year-end Top 100 (which it very well might), they could do 12/27/86. I saw the showlist for that one; it has "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and a version of "White Christmas", the latter as an LDD. (For what it's worth, it also has "We Are the World" as another LDD!)

Yeah. My guess is a Christmas special for the 70s, and a Part 1 / 100-51 of a year-end for the 80s, with the option to go with the AT10 Christmas Special archives for affiliates of both shows.

Actually, quite a few of the stations that flip are Oldies/Classic Hits. WBBG is one of them. WMXY (Hot AC) is another station that will flip, though the 80s show should still be heard since they play the "regular" music online. (I'll e-mail the PD around mid-November to find out what the plan is.)

Keep in mind that this past year, Christmas also fell on a weekend (Dec. 25th was a Saturday), and though many stations preempted the show for Christmas music, there were plenty of the Premiere AT40 subscribers that still played the shows. On 12/25/10, the 70's show was the Top 40 of 1974, and the 80's was 100-51 of the Top 100 of 1985. I see no reason why they would do anything different this year, except that they might play the year-end special for the 70's on the weekend of 12/31/11 - 1/1/12.
