This was in either Nov or Dec 1978. Casey introduced An Everlasting Love over the intro of Our Love Don't Throw It All Away, or maybe it was the other way around. Anyway, I remember being very surprised that the producers could have let that slip through. I never heard such an obvious error on the show.
Have either of the Flashbacks aired this error? If not, do you think they ever will? Or would they get around it somehow?

This error occurred on the 1-6-79 show. It will probably never be heard, as it was a show that was guest-hosted by Mark Elliot.

I say that the error when they played the wrong side of the Rod Stewart tune was also pretty bad. (Played Los Paraguyos instead of Angel on 12-16-72)

I also recall an error on a show when Casey played POPCORN by Hot Butter and when the song ended he said "That was HOT BUTTER by Popcorn!"

Sirius XM left the incorrect Andy Gibb song in. Incidentally, regarding the 1972 Rod Stewart error, when Premiere replayed that show they inserted "Angel" where it should have been, while playing "Los Paraguayos" as an optional extra with an intro from Larry Morgan explaining the original mistake.

I remember hearing this error back in 1979 and the station that aired AT40 in the Atlanta area at the time, played Don't Throw It All Away after the intro played on the show. At the time, I thought that it was recorded on the show that way--now all these years later I know that was not the case. Sort of sad, that Mark Elliott, who recently passed away, is remembered for this error on that AT40 show. Reportedly Mark was one of the more pleasant substitute hosts, and of course, was the host of the first real competitor to American Top 40--the Weekly Top 30 that ran for two and a half years. (June 1979-Jan 1982)

But yeah you wonder how many people heard it at the time and assumed it was Elliott himself that played the wrong record.

While we are talking about the Andy Gibb (and Rod Stewart) erroneous songs being played, do any of you remember the Casey's Top 40 from February 1, 1997 when Casey was supposed to play Prince's new song, "The Holy River" at #31, and instead played "Somebody's Somebody". I have always wondered how in 1997 that mistake could have happened. I just read that "Somebody's Somebody" was the B side to "Holy". I guess they used singles still in 1997 on CT, however that would be hard when many of the songs that hit the top 40 then were actually not singles. Would love to know how the error actually happened.

After the original CDs were sent to stations for the AT40 broadcast dated March 6, 1999, with guest host Ed McMann, a “revised” program was rushed to affiliates. I recall AM/FM Radio Networks asked stations to destroy the original copy of the earlier shipped program. But I don’t remember the exact reason.

(At least not in the U.S. - in England, "River/Somebody" charted as a double-sided single.) Though, stations did have promo CDs to use, which would ostensibly be where this came from.

(June 1979-Jan 1982) Mark of course hosted AT40 six other times in the late 70s/early 80s as well as being the regular Casey's Top 40 guest host from 1989-93 (not to mention lending his voice to Disney and other stuff) so I don't think he's only or mainly remembered for this goof that wasn't his fault, though there are four other 1970s AT40s he hosted that SXM could have chosen. The original cue sheets for the January 6, 1979 countdown include instructions for affiliates on how to substitute the correct Andy Gibb song; SXM could have done this (I think Premiere would have if they played it) but they apparently decided this time to go for originial authenticity, mistakes and all.

Apparently, that was a promise they couldn't keep. (And yes, they misspelled "until".)

Would love to know how the error actually happened. Even when singles weren't commercially available, sometimes radio stations, jukeboxes, etc. received special or promotional copies. But by 1997 that probably didn't mean 45s which could be mistakenly placed on the turntable wrong side up. Maybe someone hit the wrong track on the CD player?
