If not the late winter of 1972, then when? This was one week, and arguably not even the softest of that winter.
10: SWEET SEASONS – CAROLE KING 9: AMERICAN PIE – DON McLEAN 8: EVERYTHING I OWN - BREAD 7: THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT – ROBERT JOHN 6: JOY – APOLLO 100 5: DOWN BY THE LAZY RIVER - THE OSMONDS 4: LET’S STAY TOGETHER – AL GREEN 3: PRECIOUS & FEW - CLIMAX 2: HURTING EACH OTHER – THE CARPENTERS 1: WITHOUT YOU - NILSSON

Well it is one of the best top 10s....I and at least bestmusicexpert will say that....1972 is one of our fave years for music. A little later is the week of 5/13/72. That top 10 features the top 8 all being soul songs. Neither network played that show last year. Who is gonna step up to the plate and play that show this year?

I will disagree only because American Pie is in there. I HATE THAT SONG! But if Casey played the edit, well then, its ok! ;-D

Yes he did, that show was aired on XM this year. I find it hard to believe that anybody can hate "American Pie'. Anyone else hate that song? We all are entitled to own opinions of course. I know one person who I will guarantee does not hate it....Roberta Flack. "Killing Me Softly With His Song" was written about Don McLean.

I think I finally understand this thread title. Softest as in AC style music? I kept thinking in terms of softest as in the Top 10 that could be completely gone by the next week, or softest as in weakest.

Yes that's right - I meant "soft" as in AC - even the fast song is by The Osmonds!
BTW I went through a long period in which I hated American Pie. Just burn out, I think. I like it now, as I do most every song from the 70s, if for nothing else than the nostalgia factor, and I hated a lot of them back then. Off the top of my head, just #1s, I could not stand The Morning After, Black Water, Dark Lady, and Cat's In The Cradle. I remember being angry when they reached #1.
And of course then there was You Light Up My Life. To keep Boogie Nights week after week and How Deep Is Your Love (for awhile) from reaching #1? It made me want to rip my hair out, and I had a LOT of hair.
But I like the song now.
I STILL can't stand Bette Davis Eyes or Physical though. I still resent and find inexplicable the chart success of both songs. Oh well maybe next decade.

I could never understand the chart longevity of Why Me (that allowed it to be the #2 song of the year) nor the long reign at #1 of you Light Up My Life. Several years later I finally realized what it was. These along with My Sweet Lord are spiritual/religious songs in part. There is a huge following for such songs. I cannot explain the success of Bette Davis Eyes nor Physical however. I know they are both by nice looking blonde women and are similar in their lyrical content. But they are not really unique and so cannot explain their 19 combined weeks at #1.

That's right. Debby sang it as a spiritual song and that approach apparently came across to many listeners. I never realized it until I heard that she had acknowledged it, however.
Long chart runs are fascinating. I literally got goose bumps when Casey introduced Love Machine this past weekend. The man really had the knack for maximzing the drama of this stuff.
And a couple of weeks ago How Deep Is Your Love was about to FINALLY fall out of the Top 40 and it RISES two notches instead!
Goosebumps.

Ok, I now have this up. I couldn't leave the song in because it was being flagged for copyright. I do not understand why it flags me but people put up songs all the time with powerpoints of the lyrics and that gets through just fine. Anyway, here's Casey Kasem intro'ing the song. Gives me chills. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXQZtSgj-FA

That sounded very familiar.....aaah, yes, it was aired by XM just a few weeks ago on the 3/13/71 AT40. Thanks just the same. Oh and the lady who sings it is a folk icon.
