I was just wondering if anybody had or new where to get a list of all of the LP or album cuts that were big at top 40 radio from 1970 to about 1990-91 when billboard started keeping track. I have complete every top 40 hit from 1970 to the present and would like to include the album cuts such as "Into The Groove", Stairway To Heaven and Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming' but want a complete list or at least as complete a list as can get. If anyone can help it would be great if not pointing me in the right direction would great as well.

"Pinball Wizard" - Elton John (1975) "Tommy" The soundtrack was on a different label than Elton's so contractual agreement kept it from single release. But Elton was at his peak at the time so radio pounced on it, even as "Philadelphia Freedom" was still hot.
"Isn't She Lovely" - Stevie Wonder (1976) "Songs In The Key Of Life" Radio hit on this before "I Wish" became the leadoff single.
"More Than A Woman" - Bee Gees (1978) "Saturday Night Fever" Radio started playing it in anticipation of it being the follow-up to "Night Fever". But the Tavares version of the song was released instead.
"All Of My Love" - Led Zeppelin (1979) "In Through The Out Door" Got lots of play before "Fool In The Rain" was issued on 45.

Two from early 1991, which weren't released as singles and so didn't make the Billboard Hot 100, but were top 10 hits at Radio & Records (and thus on Casey's Top 40 and Rick Dees' countdown):
"Do the Bartman"-Bart Simpson- from the cartoon family's "The Simpsons Sing the Blues" album.
"State of the World"-Janet Jackson- had this been issued as a single, it probably would have been the 8th top 10 hit from the "Rhythm Nation 1814" album--then an unheard-of achievement.
Also, in addition to "Into the Groove" (#6 R&R in 1985), Madonna had a smaller airplay-only hit in 1988 with "Spotlight" (#31 R&R). Bon Jovi had two Radio/Records top 40 hits in 1987 with "Never Say Goodbye" (#35) and "Edge of a Broken Heart" (#39), neither of which was issued as a single.

Also from 1985, there was significant airplay for "Back In Time"; the never-to-be follow up to Huey Lewis' "Power of Love" from the Back to the Future film.
I also remember "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton getting a lot of airplay in 1978 while "Lay Down Sally" was charting. I don't think that was ever released as a single.

"Cocaine" was also the B-side for Clapton's hit "Tulsa Time" and it came into the Top 40 in late 1980 or early 1981.

"Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" - Billy Joel (1978) "The Stranger" Not sure if it got widespread play nationwide but I remember New Yorkers ate it up like a plateful of spaghetti!

top40fan, I'm not sure if a complete list of songs you're looking for exists in just one place. I believe, as 40fan has hinted in yesterday's post, that the definition of "big at top 40 radio" may vary from station to station, and from market to market. Some may suggest that list entries are subject to individual observations and opinions.
Assembling those songs together here, however, may help accomplish your goal.
Here are a few more that can be considered...
A few LP tracks featured on AT40: I Heard It Through The Grapevine -- CCR Keep The Customer Satisfied -- Simon & Garfunkel Waiting On You All -- George Harrison Mercedes Benz -- Janis Joplin Every Picture Tells A Story -- Rod Stewart Everything's Coming Our Way -- Santana Rip This Joint -- Rolling Stones
And some others from the early to mid-70s: Rock And Roll -- Led Zeppelin Iron Man -- Black Sabbath Roll Over Beethoven -- ELO Changes -- David Bowie Lucky Man -- Emerson, Lake & Palmer Walk Away -- James Gang La Grange -- ZZ Top

That one actually was a single... and in fact, despite missing the top 40 on Billboard, was played on AT40 the week they had to guess the rankings. "Rock and Roll" and "Changes" were also singles, and missed the top 40 (though "Changes" did make the top 40 on R&R.) Another one that comes to mind here is "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac.

But were they singles or LP tracks first? I believe most of them -- if not all -- are known better and referred to more often today as album cuts. But again, some may disagree depending on market popularity.

Back in Time by Huey Lewis & The News was the song that they thought would be the big hit from Back To The Future and many believe that was the first song that would be released however The Power of Love won out.

I'm looking for songs that did not make it to the Airplay charts as I used Joel's pop annual book for my research and have every song in the top 40 portion from 1970 to the present!!!

Right Now My 160 GB Ipod has every top 40 hit from 1970 to the present on the BB Hot 100 (Including all the airplay cuts from 1987 to 1998). All the #1's on other BB charts (AC/Adult Top 40, Modern, Mainstream Rock and R&B) from 1970 to the present. A Christmas Songs list ( I had to guess a few non charting songs and miss the hard to find ones). A New York Classics List of songs from the 1970 to 1982 WABC lists and from 1983 to the present from the Z-100 Lists. If anybody has a list of the top 100 songs from New York station WYNy and could send it to me that would be great!!
I'm looking for list of all the songs to make AT40 when they did not use the BB Hot 100. A list of popular album cuts from 1970 to 1991 the did not chart but got enough airplay that If they were singles they would have made the top 40. I will probably do the country #1's and dance Club play #1's some time in the future. If anybody at this board has a lot of those songs and is willing to help let me know (Country and Dance club play #1's). Also if anybody has compiled lists of all the songs to make American Top 40 to not make the top 40 on BB let me know thanks in advance!!!

I found a list of all the top 40 hits on the non hot 100 shows from 1991-1995. I don't need that list anymore. It seems the list was up in an earlier post.

"Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" - Billy Joel (1978) "The Stranger" Not sure if it got widespread play nationwide but I remember New Yorkers ate it up like a plateful of spaghetti! An AMAZING piece of music, 'Captain Jack' is another great track. It's from the album 'Piano Man'
