Are there any app updates? Dees 2K has updated to May 4, 2002. So far, that's it. Worth noting: Present-day shows were updated right away this morning, but before I left to run errands just before Noon, none of the retros had yet. ETA: The 80s have updated...but they're doing the same show as on the radio side, so like it or not, you get the overplayed 5/2/87. This time, it's the 90s that remain the last holdout.

I hope I'm not the only one who had a Billy Joel moment when Rick was talking about "cola wars" between Britney and Christina, LOL. Rick, to what should be the surprise of no one, got his weeks mixed up for #1s from this week back in 1975, versus 1985 - 1975 had "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song", which was #1 on the last week of April rather than the first week of May, which would in fact match the chart week that this week's countdown is based on. (And both Billboard and Cash Box agree on that point; it didn't hit #1 in R&R.) But then, 1985 had "Crazy For You", which didn't hit #1 on the Weekly Top 40 until the first week of May. (1995's "I Know", of course, had a long run at #1, encompassing both weeks.) RECEPTION ERROR: "Irresistible" did NOT debut this week at #28, Rick just played it as an Extra. Instead, #28 was Not On Disc (like "Slow Jamz" last week, he didn't even mention it) - and based on the corresponding R&R chart, it has to be "I Hope You Dance". So there'd be just two debuts this week (Evan and Jaron, and Britney) instead of three, with Pink and Tonya Mitchell as the droppers - and "Irresistible" would, of course, debut next week. By the way, to get this week's chart: Take R&R's April 20 chart, delete Fuel, Incubus, Outkast, and Ja Rule, and - there you go! Everything else stays in order. He apparently took Fuel off a few weeks back, and I don't know why he held Incubus off for a week (they'd just debut next week). Rick played the original "Stutter", which is more of a ballad and is Joe alone - AT40 played the remix this same week (May 5 was one of the three shows WPNC played in 2020), but without Mystikal. Incidentally, between that and the Outkast and Ja Rule exclusions, clearly Rick was still trying to keep as much rap out of the countdown as he could - a battle he would fold on in short order - but at least he had the decency to keep Lil' Kim's rap in on "Lady Marmalade". AT40, in contrast? I think they actually might have cut her out every single week until sometime in June?! (I've heard 4/21, 5/5, and 6/2 - all three cut her out, with 6/2 being particularly egregious as that week has a story about her! The first show from its run that I've heard where she stays in, is 6/23. Possible they wised up before that - I just wouldn't have heard the show in question to be able to confirm that, as those four are the first four from its run that I've heard to date.) Later on, he also left City Spud in on "Ride Wit Me". (More notable is that I think my station only ever played a version that was Nelly alone.) On that song, Rick also compared it to "Get Down on It" by Kool & The Gang, which even Wiki notes (on the page for "Get Down") that though "Ride" does not strictly sample "Get Down", the two use an identical chord progression.
