Well, I ended up finding out the answer - it is in there, much to my dismay. As I said, it feels too much like a "clean" version of a song that doesn't feel like it really needs one (especially considering that the single that came right before it, "Nice and Slow", is a full-on sex jam) - but I also happen to have the My Way album as well. I didn't even know this other version existed until getting the 1998 AT40s and going through them. Incidentally - you say it had fallen off the Weekly Top 40 by 10/31? He must have taken it off early then - it falls off AT40 that same week, so with Rick being behind them, that should instead be its last week on his countdown. Not unless he instead just skipped it?

I quick listened to the 10/31 WT40 show before my previous post and didn't hear it. I'll see if I can go through it more Nice & Slow. ETA: Yep, it was #39 that week...Rick had indeed skipped it.

For 1998 - does Rick play this version of "My Way"? www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkDXKNV8hgAAT40 only ever played that version, which I'd love to know why. It feels too much like a "clean" version for a song that didn't really need one, IMO. For 1993 - it's a rare week where as many as the Top 8 are all holding, and that's thanks to the #1 song going for a then-record-tying 9 weeks up there. That, and in that Top 8, only #4 and #5 aren't peaking - and neither of them get to #1 either! It'd be Janet's other song in the countdown to knock her off, the one that only debuts just this week. I have listened the show twice and yes, Rick does use that same version you mentioned on here. The local radio station I listened to at the time only played that version too. I am unsure what the “unclean” version would even sound like..lol

I miss the days when Rick regularly acknowledged past hits, either by playing #1 songs from this week in history, or by playing medleys that somehow tied in with a current hit. His show today seems to have zero effort put into it. (Or maybe radio programmers just discourage this practice because God forbid people hear pieces of "unfamiliar" songs on the radio and immediately change the station...)

WBEL Mostly90s.com is playing 10/26/96 today. The sure shot is "You Must Love Me" by Madonna. This is the 3rd airing for this show on retro-Dees, the most recent being 10/24/2020. This is the HAC version.

I don’t believe he has any interaction with the listeners either anymore, like he used to call them about the challenge or other contests.

They’ve had a new writer since mid 2015 so I’m sure that’s part of the problem.

The 1988 show was one of the rare weeks were none of the songs were holding. The artists we’ve lost in the years since include Eddie Money, Robert Palmer, George Michael, Glenn Frey, Whitney Houston, Jeff Labar and Michael Hutchence. Anyone else?

Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys, Steve Clark of Def Leppard and Brian Travers of UB40 are also dead.

It was great to hear the original version of "December 1963" on the 1994 show instead of the inferior remix. Now if only they could have played the original version of "Lucky One".
