It looks like there actually was a reason there was no announcement for this week's show. Turns out they're doing a special countdown of the 46 biggest artists of the '80s for President's Day weekend.

Here is something else that's noteworthy about the last 1987 Big 40 show: If you've been seeing the "Highest single at its peak on a Top-40 chart before the #1 song" thread, you will know by now that "Jimmy Lee", by Aretha Franklin (at #28), is literally the ONLY peaking single on that show before a single-week summit-peaker (that being "Open Your Heart", by Madonna). This has got to be the lowest final peaking single before the #1 single of the entire 1980s decade. A couple of thoughts: It would be so cool if you were to put together a master list. Perhaps to make it a little more relevant to the forum, you could post it in the AT40 '80s thread rather than here.

Well, talk about going out of their way to avoid some new charts to close out February...! No, but seriously, how completely out-of-left-field random. After this week, they could still do 83 and then 88, but then 89 has the same problem as 85: Next new chart isn't until the third week of March.

It did say it was according to Billboard so thankfully it won't look too much like they used a dartboard for the rankings. I just hope this doesn't mean we're going to end up getting stuck with recent repeats because of this pushing everything up by a week.

I just hope this doesn't mean we're going to end up getting stuck with recent repeats because of this pushing everything up by a week. The outlook isn't...too great: February 24: 1983 or 1988 would be the best picks as they'd be new. 2/23/85 was done in 2016, 2/25/89 was done in 2018. March 3: 1988, if it doesn't close out February, would be the only newbie. 3/5/83 would be a 4th time play (last done in 2020), 3/4/89 (done last year) would be a 3rd time, 3/2/85 was done in 2017. March 10: Repeat no matter what gets picked. 3/9/85 was done last year, 3/12/83 was done in 2016, 3/11/89 was done in 2015, 3/12/88 would be a 3rd time play but hasn't been done since 2013. March 17: Your "new" picks would be 1985 or 1989. The other two would be 3rd time plays, with 3/19/83 last done last year and 3/19/88 last done the year before last. And of course if a different year altogether gets picked then this gets immediately disregarded. But even without that, at least one of these weeks is likely to be lousy IMO.

Anyone wishes the VJ Big 40 should just do away with these special countdowns altogether? I thought for a second that we were going to get a 1989 chart featuring a peaking "Wild Thing", by Tone Loc.

They almost never do specials outside of year-end stuff so I don't get what the big deal is besides them doing one on a super random holiday.
And apparently the '90s and 2000s channels are also doing their own top 46 artists countdowns too.

^^It's because we're going to be forced to wait at least another year just to see that February 18, 1989 chart on the Big 40. We'd have to hope a similar special isn't slotted for this same time then.
Also, were there any occasions where the VJ Big 40 missed-out on covering a frozen-week chart because of a year-end special?

Yeah I sat through the special and was quite bored. I wish they could have dug deeper with some of the artists instead of featuring songs by them that usually get played on a daily basis.
Obviously there was no announcement for next week but 1989 will probably be the best bet. I just hope this doesn't become a thing with the 80s-00s channels.

Also, were there any occasions where the VJ Big 40 missed-out on covering a frozen-week chart because of a year-end special? I'm going to preface this by first pointing out that "frozen" weeks weren't necessarily static within a calendar year. Some years, the first week of the calendar year was frozen, others it was the last week, others none (!) were, others both first and last were. 1981, 1982, 1986, 1987 - first week of the calendar year ONLY frozen 1984, 1989 - last week only 1983, 1988 - both first week and last week frozen 1980, 1985 - no frozen weeks within the calendar year There isn't really a better way to categorize these IMO than to just use the calendar year, but obviously, no matter what the date range would be for Billboard's survey period for a given year, there'd be a frozen week that would fall within the calendar year-end holidays. (So, for 1980-81 it'd be the first week of calendar year 1981, for 1981-82 it'd be the first week of calendar year 1982, for 1982-83 it'd be the first week of calendar year 1983, for 1983-84 it'd be the last week of calendar year 1983, and so forth using the above breakdown.) So, as for times when they had the CHANCE to dodge a frozen week? 2012 - last week had the second of two December specials. And yet 2013 kicked off with a "frozen" chart! 2015, 2016 - first week had a special 2018, 2022 - last week had a special 2019-20 - last week of 19 and first week of 20 used to cover a single large special, the only time so far where both possible "frozen week" times have been covered 2021 - first week AND last week each had separate specials
