Next week it'll be all about 1983. Meanwhile 1982 and 1989 are still ignored, but I don't remember the last time 5/21 was featured.

As for Memorial Day weekend, since it doesn't look like there will be a special (though that can change), I think 1989 would be the best bet because 82 and 84 would be consecutive at both ends with 1983, and of course it would be a new chart date to boot.

Guess what this airing will have in common with that one?

Really hoping for May 27, 1989 next. It would be new to this rotation, and at least we know we won't get the same from Premiere. And it would keep a July 1989 show at least possible, which is one of the months that seemingly always gets skipped while June and August are done to death.

I was expecting the Mark-Alan-Nina talk break format for this week's 1987 Big 40 show, but instead the Nina-Mark-Alan format is being used instead, even though it was used for the last 1980 show just two weeks ago. Why? (Last week's 1985 show used Alan-Nina Mark.)

Except that 7/29/89 is the only July chart ever played and at this point, it's the only likely candidate for that month. June 1988 is also likely to be passed over again, and the jury is still out on August 1987. Meanwhile, the 90s on 9 hit a new milestone with their first-ever FIVE-time repeat chart. That's five times in eight years to be specific. And of course, it continues to follow the "let's play what we did two years ago" pattern that's been going on since last summer. Even better, it was from 1998, a year bogged down by hard-core rap songs that CHR radio never played. Let's just say my motivation to hear this show was somewhat low today.

Have any 80s charts been featured five times yet? There of course have been several that have been done four times.

Wow, I'd forgotten we've heard two July 1989 charts. I had it in my head that both that month and August 1987 (both 5-weekend months) only had their final week played.
I caught a piece of tonight's final replay of 1987, specifically Nina Blackwood's "hints" segment, which was even more annoying than usual this week. She talks about Cutting Crew as a band "known for syrupy love songs." Really? How many people actually remember them at all?
She goes on to state that their song's title came from a poem, but smugly says she won't quote the poem because "that will give it away." She says this as the song is playing behind her, as the song's title is on the radio display, and TWO SECONDS BEFORE SHE TELLS YOU WHAT IT IS.
Okay, it's out of my system now...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't get that segment. What's the point of it when half the time the song shows up on the display before she's done reading them? I mean it's only done during the top 3 and most of the time the songs are pretty recognizable anyway. Also with that "syrupy love song" one, you'd think she was referring to Air Supply or something. Mike, now you have a new club "The Five Times Played Club." Let's hope it doesn't grow.

"I"ve Been In Love Before", CC's other top 10 hit, could maybe qualify as a "syrupy love song", but not "(I Just) Died In Your Arms", which is the one song from them that most remember. (I like "One For the Mockingbird", a smaller hit, better than either of their big ones.) If Nina wants to challenge listeners more, then maybe she should do this trivia/guessing segment earlier in the show leading into a smaller or less remembered hit. That would frankly be more interesting.

Mike, now you have a new club "The Five Times Played Club." Not much of a club when there's only one member (at least, on the 80s side).
