So we're finally getting a new 1988 chart. Even if there does end up being some special pushing it back for Labor Day, we'll still end up with a new one regardless.

A few pages back, Mike posted a list of chart dates that haven't been used yet, and both 9/3 and 9/10 haven't been done. At least there's still a chance we'll get either one regardless of whether or not there will be a special. And get this. BITDR will be doing 1995 again THREE WEEKS after it last played. Also Lisa Loeb will be subbing and you'd think they would choose 1994, which hasn't been done in a few months anyway, because of her song "Stay (I Missed You)" being on the chart, but of course not. Even with the recent repeats on the 80s, at least this isn't happening. Still hoping for 9/3/88 or 9/10/88 to play but losing faith quickly. As I feared, it's beginning to seem a like a repeat of September/October 1984 from last year. Oh, and that 90s countdown? 1995 not only played three weeks ago, but in early June as well. And both the June and August charts were repeats from two years ago. This weekend they'll do August 28, 1993 (the weekend I first arrived at college as a student, BTW). Which is fine but for the fact that they just did 1993 five weeks ago. Meanwhile in between those two years is 1994 which I don't think they've done in several months.

Very happy to hear next week's chart selection. We'll finally break up another big block of consecutive unplayed charts. I'm glad they didn't wait one more week because if we got 9/10 then the next show would likely be 11/19, which to date is the only November chart that's been played. I think maybe they went with the 1985 repeat this week because of the calendar layout. Next week's initial airing will be on 9/3, so maybe not an ideal time to air an August chart. The upside to all this is that last year they waited 12 weeks to play 1985 again, so if we get the standard ten weeks this time it will be a new show. (The same will be true of 1987 as we head into October.) This weekend they'll do August 28, 1993 (the weekend I first arrived at college as a student, BTW). Which is fine but for the fact that they just did 1993 five weeks ago. Meanwhile in between those two years is 1994 which I don't think they've done in several months. This is the fourth month in a row to feature 1993, as well as being the third month in a row to feature 1995. Meanwhile, no 1994 since April and no 1990 since May. At least most of the 1993 choices were good selections (the exception being today's, which was a 2019 repeat). Next week will most likely be a special.

Since the last ten weeks had all different years, I am wondering if 1980 will be featured on 9-10-21. It seems unlikely, but possible that the next ten weeks would be in the same order as the past ten weeks. Here are the last ten (to include this Friday's) 80, 86, 83, 87, 81, 84, 89, 82, 85 and 88.

My first choice would be to see 1986 come up next, but I'm somewhat skeptical that they'd play 85-88-86. However, the first two weeks of September 1986 remain unplayed and we already know we're not getting 9/6.

Actually, as it happens, groupings very much like that (including only the years of 85-89) have tended to happen with varying frequency many times over starting at 2014 - in fact, the last such trio was 86-88-85 just last August. When I say varying frequency, it can range from as little as 2-3 months apart (in other words, using back to back sets of rotations) to a little over a year apart. Essentially, one could argue that we're about due for another one of these. It's 1980 that hasn't been done in the longest, though just by one week longer than 86 - if 86 were to go and then 80, 9/20/80 wouldn't be too bad of a repeat either (last done in 2014, though it would be a third-time play - 9/20/86, by comparison, was done slightly more recently, in 2016, if only the once).

You want to know what's unique about the countdown panel that's being covered on the Big 40 this week? There is only one single at its peak on that Top 40 chart before the number-one single: "Look Out Any Window", by Bruce Hornsby and the Range (at #35). I've seen Big 40 countdown shows where there are two peaking singles before the top single (one example being the editions with the twice-covered June 29, 1985 Hot 100 chart).

Incorrect - "I Don't Want to Be a Hero" and "All Fired Up" are also peaking this week, at #31 and #19. (They're also both holding, while Bruce + the Range are not.) I have heard a number of such AT40s over the years, though - kind of wish I had these written down somewhere. Offhand, I know that 2/7/87 does fit the criteria, where the one is #28 "Jimmy Lee". (That's also a week that Big 40 has never done, a consequence of doing 1/31 four times.)

Next week it'll be all about 1986! The best part of it is that the first two weeks of September have never been done so it will be a new one regardless.

Evidently, Big 40 agreed with me. With the stilted calendar vs. Friday dating, it could be either 9/6 or 9/13, but it wouldn't matter either way - neither one will have yet been done until now. The two years next due to come back will now be 1980 and 1983. Regardless of which one goes before the other, the one that goes right after '86 will be at least a decent choice, while the last week of September will be much less so. If 1983 goes next, that'd make a third consecutive new chart, as 9/17 hasn't been done. If 1980 goes next, that at least hasn't been done since 2014 (even if 9/20 would be its third time total). For the last week of September, 9/24/83 was last done just three years ago, while 9/27/80's two times have both been in the past four years. But either one of those might still be preferable over the next one in line after those - 1987, as while 9/26 was only done in 2012, neither of that year's two subsequent weeks have been done at all.

If by the "two subsequent weeks" of 1987 you mean the first two weekends of October, then IIRC 10/10/87 was the first ever VJ Big 40 Countdown played in 2009, so that has been done before--though then they inserted a song (Richard Marx' "Should've Known Better") that wasn't yet in the Billboard Hot 100's top 40 in place of one that was, so it wasn't technically replicating the official Billboard chart. Otherwise the chart was mostly the same as Billboard's, ending with "Here I Go Again". But at least we won't get yet another 9/12/87 replay.

Hence why I don't include anything pre-2012 in my lists of what's been done. Between instances like this and that they could change chart sources from week to week - it's just not the same.

Next weekend's episode should be 9-13-86 since they normally go with the closest date to 9-10. If 1980 is the following week, the same situation, as 9-20-80 would be closest to 9-17.

Also of note, the 90s countdown this week is from 1990, the first such in over three months.
