I'm hoping this doesn't mean 1981 will be pushed down by a week because 5/16 was done just last year.

Possibly altering the sequence so 1981 is available for 7-30-21, the 40th MTV anniversary? Surprising that 1983 did come before 1981, 1987 and 1984.

If that's the case, if they are trying to get 8/1/81 for that particular weekend, then it's pretty likely that they'll hold off 1981 for the third week of May.

1983 is now played the third time of the year, and 1981, 1987 and 1984 all need their second play. If they go with 1987 on 5-14-21, and that would allow 1981 to be on May 21st. Laura, would that be ten weeks from July 30th?

Of course if they plan on doing a special on either the Memorial Day or July 4th weekends, that can change these even more.

Very good point, and as I think it was noted, there have been MD specials the last two years. So if 1981 is played on 5-14-21, and a Memorial Day Special on 5-28-21, it might rotate to 7-30-21. I have never known any extra songs to be played on the VJ Countdown, but maybe an exception for "Video Killed the Radio Star" as the first song played on MTV.

They've also never done Memorial Day Specials three years in a row. Technically the last two years are the only time there's even been ones in back-to-back years, but in 2016 there were both Memorial Day and Labor Day Specials (the only time the latter's been done) and it was followed by 2017 having the Special right in the middle of the year.
Which is to say that the case could be made for this to be an off year as well.

Ummm, last year they announced 1982 then had a Memorial Day Special. They put minimal effort into planning the next show; I seriously doubt they are looking three months out.

Honestly I think all the decade channels do the same thing. I mean look at the BITDR! Most of the dates they have used over the past few weeks have all been played just two years ago. I understand how annoying the Big 40 is to you but they're not the only ones who are like that.

You're not kidding. It's gotten absurd. The past four weeks of 90s countdowns, including this week, were all last played in 2019. And the week before that was the same year as 2019 as well, but the chart was from a week earlier. At least the pattern is certain to break next week, because even if they keep the year sequence it would be an earlier chart than we heard two years ago. Back on topic, I agree with LVK that the Big 40 producers aren't likely planning this month's shows based on how it will affect the August schedule. Only a tiny group of fans (read: us) care about things like that. We definitely need to see 1987 before 5/30. Either of the 3rd or 4th week of May would be a new chart from that year and we need that after the past two months of repeats.

For the final Tuesday night rerun, they switched the version of "I Do What I Do" to the one they usually played on AT40.

Next week it'll be all about 1987!
I was afraid they were going to repeat last year's 1981 show. Guessing that's for the week after.

Good. After last week I was half-tempted to say we might as well pencil in 81-84-87 in that order right then and there. (That would, of course, have translated to three more weeks of It Aired Within The Last Four Years, but that seemed to be the kick they were on.) Now, 81 and then 84 can go after, and that'd be a relief.

As mentioned, May 16, 1987 is up for the 80s next week, so not another repeat.

Laura, we guessed that the first ten years would be all different, and a few years after that followed the first ten, but now it changes! I thought for sure it would be 1981 as well, which is now the year longest without play.
