It occurs to me that by playing 1989 next, if we assume that year will come up every ten weeks, we'll miss out yet again on a July 1989 show. Last year's 7/1/89 was the only time that month has been played and as of now the next two shows would fall in early April and the much-overplayed June.

True...on the other hand, if they shaved off a week and did 4/1 instead, that hasn't been done either. Getting to the three-week period of 4/29-5/13 (none of which have been done) would require pushing 89 back a few weeks.
(Sidebar: I have 7/29 as airing in 2015...)

It seems like the first ten weeks of the year are all 10 different years. With 1988, 1983, 1980, and 1989 playing the last weekend of January, that leaves 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987 for the next six weeks.
Prediction:
2-5 1985 2-12 1982 2-19 1986 2-26 1981 3-5 1984 3-12 1987

I mentioned on the previous page that we'll start to see which years have had their played charts spread out better (therefore having fewer left to go), but we'll also start to see which points on the calendar have fewer options left standing. Case in point: The two weeks above. The week of 2-12 has just 2/15/86 or 2/14/87 not yet done, though 1987 could feasibly go in there if 2-5 has 1985 and they don't want to follow that with 1986. 3-12 has just 3/15/80 or 1985 (either 3/9 or 3/16) - assuming they don't push 1985 out to March, that week will likely have a repeat chart.

Just playfully guessing for some fun in these distressing times. I am just glad I don't receive a grade or prize money as I would fail for the grade, and not receive any money! I still would like to know who decides the years that are played--some program manager perhaps? I also wonder how much in advance the years are decided.
I honestly don't know if they compare this years' shows to previous years as not to avoid duplication of said past years. I know--inquiring minds want to know, but will we? Just keep on pondering....

You want to know what's odd about the chart being covered on next week's VJ Big 40 (January 28, 1989)? Neither the number-one R&B single nor the number-one Adult Contemporary single will be around on that Countdown. "Superwoman", by Karyn White, was as its third week at #1 on the then-Hot Black Singles chart, but it was entering the Hot 100 at #87 that week. And "As Long As You Follow" only stalled at #43 pop. The only other occurrence of the #1 R&B and AC singles being MIA from the Pop Top 40 was June 23, 1984 ("Lovelite", by O'Bryan, and "Believe in Me", by Dan Fogelberg, respectively); in that case, neither of them reached the Hot 100's Top 40 at all.
Two hours ago (after the end of the 1980 Big 40's last airing), I heard Mark Goodman mention that "Superwoman" was going to be on next week's 1989 countdown, but I'll have to give a little spoiler alert: The previous single from Karyn White's eponymous debut album ("The Way You Love Me", a Fall '88 entry) is still on the chart (its 16th week overall), going up a spot to its #7 peak the following week (February 4, its 17th).

Another new chart, nice! As for the rest of February, I'm think 1982, 1986, and then 1981, in that order.

No. All of February 1985 has been done already, but to get to the next available chart would have required going another 5 weeks out from the first of February - far too long since the last 85 was back in November. Hopefully it's 2/2, as that has only been done in 2013. If it's 2/9, that was last done in 2018 and this would be a third-time play.

Though I wouldn't put it past them to go with the date that was more recently used over either a new one or one that hasn't been done in some time. Case in point, last week. The thing is 1985 will more than likely come around again in April, and that was done over the past three years.

Worse, 10 weeks out from this airing puts 4/13 in play, which has three plays to its credit already.

Airing February 9, 1985 would also be Groundhog Day, in the Bill Murray sense. I do hope that they hold off on the next 1989 for about ten weeks, until April. Then we won't get 3/25/89 for the umpteenth time.

So too would 2/20/88, but odds are against that one coming around again. Though, I see that it does seem to be due for a return on the Premiere side, which I don't disagree with.

Taking this week's show into account, the earliest 1989 chart that's never been played is now 2/18/89. Compare that with 1985 and 1988, each of which still has 3 unplayed January charts.
On a related note, the 90s countdown gives us a repeat of 2/1/92 this week, and that's another year which features three never-played January charts.
I see what you mean about April 1985. That's what happens when they keep playing the same January chart every year. Maybe they'll spare us and wait at least 12 weeks before playing 1985 again. (Which of course will cause whining about why such a great year is being ignored, but hey, you can't please everyone.)
