Alan introduces Save a Prayer by Duran Duran as, "their biggest song to date, peaking at #2, kept out of the top spot by Eye of the Tiger". Strange that song hit #1 in 82, 6 months before Duran Duran's first US top 40 single. Save a Prayer topped at 16. That was actually like that in the UK. I wish the writers would just once read Wikipedia closer.

Nice that we're getting an April 1989 show!
Also we're going from one end of the decade to the other over the course of a week.

Nice that we're getting an April 1989 show! Also we're going from one end of the decade to the other over the course of a week. Just like Premiere does (as much as they can) in the opposite direction with Casey's 70s countdowns, with 1979 this week and 1971 next week. Next week is likely April 15, 1989, which they previously played in 2012 (interestingly, the week after that they did 1980.) Good that we didn't get yet another retread of March 25, 1989--or April 18, 1987, which they've done several times and this year would have replicated the week's Casey show.

I don't want to bring issues like this to this forum, but last night, I got into a nasty fight on the 1985 Countdown Thread at the 80s on 8 Facebook page over the following week's 1980 Countdown. One commenter said that we were being "punished" with 1980, but I rebutted by saying that we were being "serenaded". The commenter insisted that the music from the year 1980 was "terrible", and so are any countdowns from that year, and as funny as the comments saying that the music from 1980 sounded like 1976-78 sounded, I took it rather personally. I told the commenter that the 80s Channel looks like they're focusing primarily on 1983-86 and ignores music from both ends of the decade, and the commenter acts like the hit singles from both ends of the decade should never be played on the 80s Channel (and practically wants to alter where the 80s-decade boundaries are located). Some other commenters have shared opinions/views like these on the pre-1983 or post-1987 Countdown threads as well. I don't believe in leaving a hit single unplayed on a classic-hits station just because they don't fit the stereotype of a particular decade, so such stations will play non-charters instead. I have always wished for an 80s pop-hits station that spans all years of the decade rather than just the MTV years, but I think that's a matter for another thread (and a conversation I had with doofus67 months ago).

I don't mind them taking a break from their usual playlist with the early or late '80s Big 40s. There is quite a lot going on during those times. Like for example, this weekend we have yacht rock, country crossovers, disco holdovers, R&B, classic rock staples, and even a little new wave. Next weekend, on the other hand, includes rap, freestyle dance, hair metal, big ballads, even New Age and thrash metal.

If we're going to pay for radio as with Sirius XM then I think we need something else than what we get over terrestrial radio for free. There is more to 80s music than MTV's medium to heavy rotation playlist from about mid-1982 to mid-1987, much of which is replayed endlessly on regular FM stations. Sirius XM going deeper in its countdowns, and when it does otherwise, should be complimented; if someone doesn't like a song or style they can shut it off or change the channel.

I remember that talk, Jim. It was around Halloween, if memory serves.
The "genius" who programs both the Big 40 and the channel itself, Jim Ryan, seems to take the stance that the channel is just as much in competition with the run-of-the-mill classic hits stations as any run-of-the-mill classic hits station would be.
As far as I know, SiriusXM never measures the audience sizes of the individual channels in any way. The music channels never run advertising. So why does 80s on 8 set their playlist as though they needed to be concerned about ratings and ad sales?
These Big 40 shows are meant to be our opportunity, and an ample one at that, to enjoy an alternative to the standard stuff. They run the countdowns eight to ten times a week, at all hours of the day and night.
For what it's worth, I personally stay away from the channel unless the Big 40 is on. But other points of view are valid and understandable. In the end, we all want a substantial listening experience to come with the subscription, whatever that means to each of us.

I agree with all of the above. For one thing, I can't stand people who push their opinions on others. Stating that 80s on 8 shouldn't play music because "I think it's terrible" is pure ignorance. The guy who said that isn't being held at gunpoint to pay for a subscription.
I also agree with the comments that certain channels on SiriusXM seem to be programmed no differently than terrestrial stations. This goes against many people's reason for subscribing in the first place. I think 80s on 8 has improved a tiny bit over the past few years, but it still needs a lot of work.
As for the countdown itself, I'll be happy to get the first April 1989 countdown in seven years next week. Hopefully we get 1984 the following week. And also keep your fingers crossed that they wait at least the standard 10 weeks before the next 1989 show. Eleven weeks would be even better, whereas nine weeks will give us another repeat from last year.

It was good to hear Metallica on this 89 countdown. One of the very few times you will ever hear this band on 80s on 8. And Stevie B??!! Wow. I totally forgot about this one. Raise your hands if you did too... 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

I don't get to say this often, but April is turning out to be a fantastic month for SiriusXM countdowns. Next week will not only be the third "new" chart of the past 4 weeks, but it will be the first April 1984 show ever featured.
Also, I'm not sure how many people here listen to the equivalent 90s countdown, but they are also 2 for 3 with "new" charts so far in April. And for both 80s and 90s charts, the only "repeats" so far in April were charts whose last airing was a minimum of six years ago.
Looking ahead, there's a strong possibility of a "new" 1986 show for early May as well. And ideally, we'll get 4/30/88 instead of the much-overplayed 5/7 chart. Time will tell.

No; Stevie B didn't make the Radio & Records CHR chart, and thus Rick's or Casey's countdowns of the time, until 1990.

He has also been pretty popular in south Louisiana too for some reason.
