American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest (CHR) - Week ending September 8, 2012
We're due for a chart critique on the current show. Hearing the show Sunday morning on Z100 in New York. Much of the songs on this list I'm hearing for the first time and know little about the artists, but approaching this with an open mind.
PERSONAL: Spending my 30th year on Long Island and it's the start of another bowling season, and I decided to join TWO leagues this year. Also bought a new car after seven years with a lemon. There was a tornado off the coast of near JFK Airport; no fatalities to my knowledge.
DROPPERS:
PARTY ROCK ANTHEM - LMFAO featuring LAUREN BENNETT & GOONROCK (38) Wow! this finally falls off the chart. Seems like it was gonna stay forever, and was still getting solid airplay.
ONE THING - ONE DIRECTION (34) Only heard this once.
NOW OR NEVER - OUTASIGHT (33) I think I heard more than once, but was not a strong as "Tonight Is The Night."
40: DRIVE BY - TRAIN (40) Still hanging on for another week for us to appreciate this song even more.
39: GET IT STARTED - PITBULL featuring SHAKIRA (DEBUT) Latin collaboration that will likely do well here, but destined to be an international smash!
38: STRONGER (WHAT DOESN'T KILL YOU) - KELLY CLARKSON (32) Her former #1 still has some fight in it for another week.
37: BURN IT DOWN - LINKIN PARK (39) Song is likely a big hit on the west coast as NYC hasn't really caught on to this one (yet). Decent hybrid track.
36: HEART SKIPS A BEAT - OLLY MURS (37) Liked it the moment started playing. Reminiscent of early 1990s club hits. Hope it soars.
Pretty Little Liar interview
35: GOOD FEELING - FLO RIDA (36) Although there was a soundalike called "Levels," this is the song that started the movement. His first of three appearances on the chart and still loving it. (This song is the reason why I don't listen to AC radio.) RIP Etta James.
AT40 EXTRA: BOTH OF US - B.O.B. featuring TAYLOR SWIFT - Shame this record was not a bigger hit on the chart.
34: HELLO - KARMIN (DEBUT) I can't believe this song is JUST entering the chart! I've been hearing this track for months from the duo and think it will surpass "Brokenhearted."
33: DON'T WAKE ME UP - CHRIS BROWN (35) R&B singer with a pure Europop club track. Not one of his best. He needs to change direction.
32: GLAD YOU CAME - THE WANTED (28) Former #1 for British boy band's debut single. Still has teeth.
31: TONGUE TIED - GROUPLOVE (30) Fun song likely to crack the Top 20 on this chart.
AT40 BREAKOUT: LET ME LOVE YOU (UNTIL YOU LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF) - NE-YO - Good song that has strong potential. He's looking to revive not only his career, but that of his label, the legendary Motown Records.
30: WE ARE YOUNG - FUN. featuring JANELLE MONAE (27) The across-the-board charttopper for pop group likely to be one of year's biggest hits.
AT40 SLEAZE: Kelvin Lutz
29: DARK SIDE - KELLY CLARKSON (26) Weak follow-up to former #1 still in the countdown running out of gas.
28: I WON'T GIVE UP - JASON MRAZ (29) One of very few songs to sell massive downloads based on AC airplay. Top 40 is not minutely regenerating numbers yet. Great ballad.
27: TOO CLOSE - ALEX CLARE (31) Relatively big chart move for new artist with strong hitbound track.
26: WILD ONES - FLO RIDA featuring SIA (23) Although Sia does make this track happen, it's not as strong as "Good Feeling." Still a monster hit.
Nile Horn interview about One Direction's 2nd album.
25: WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL - ONE DIRECTION (21) Debut single from the other British boy band that still kicks.
24: STARSHIPS - NICKI MINAJ (19) Europop song by Queens hip hop star still get lots of airplay in NYC. This one's a keeper.
NIle Horn interview about One Direction's new single and Demi Lovato
23: WE RUN THE NIGHT - HAVANA BROWN featuring PITBULL (17) Song took practically forever just to become a medium sized hit. Ok number that has finally run out of gas..
22: WE ARE NEVER EVER GETTING BACK TOGETHER - TAYLOR SWIFT (DEBUT) The song that started an interesting thread on this board. It sold over 600,000 downloads in its first week of release. Clearly an out-of-the-box hit, and likely to top the AT40 countdown if it doesn't quick burn.
AT40 BREAKOUT: I CAN ONLY IMAGINE - DAVID GUETTA featuring CHRIS BROWN & LIL WAYNE - This one is gonna be interesting to watch. It sounds "ahead of its time," and will challenge the ears of the artists' core fans.
21: SETTLE DOWN - NO DOUBT (22) Cute number for group's first hit in years. Hafta wait & see if it becomes a killer track.
20: POUND THE ALARM - NICKI MINAJ (24) She sings more on this track, but it's way too choatic.
19: CHASING THE SUN - THE WANTED (16) Decent follow-up to "Glad You Came." Hope it rebounds because I think it could still go Top 10.
18: SOME NIGHTS - FUN. (25) The track with probably the minimalist production in the countdown. It actually sounds better than their first hit.
17: ONE MORE NIGHT - MAROON 5 (20) Pretty funky follow-up to "Payphone." Group has definitely evolved their sound away from their first chart hit in 2004.
16: SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW - GOTYE featuring KIMBRA (14) The surprise hit of 2012 (There is always at least one every year.) Z100 normally plays a dance remix that sounds louder than the one heard on the show. Still a great song in either version.
AT40 SLEAZE: Florence & the Machine lead singer going on hiatus.
15: SCREAM - USHER (11) R&B singer with "DJ Got Us Falling In Love Pt. 3" He is also losing direction.
14: AS LONG AS YOU LOVE ME - JUSTIN BIEBER featuring BIG SEAN (18) Decent follow-up to "Boyfriend." Hope this goes Top 10 to shut up the folks who want this man's career to fold so early.
13: CALL ME MAYBE - CARLY RAE JEPSEN (8) Purely infectious number you'll either love or hate it. I'm in the former with this former #1.
12: GOOD TIME - OWL CITY & CARLY RAE JEPSEN (13) The song that saves both acts from being one-hit wonders. Nice catchy duet that rocks.
11: EVERYBODY TALKS - NEON TREES (15) Decent rock song; didn't move me much, unlike their first hit.
SUBWAY FRESH BUZZ SONG: 50 WAYS TO SAY GOODBYE - TRAIN - The mariachi affect tells me this song may only be a hit at AC radio at best.
AT40 EXTRA: THE REASON - HOOBASTANK (2004) I got no reaction to this one.
10: WANT U BACK - CHER LLOYD (12) Funky pop song with some hip hop undertones by British answer to Ke$ha.
Interview with (I didn't hear the name clearly)
9: WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? - RHIANNA (4) The other big hit from her sixth album (the only song on the countdown that appears on the R&B survey, albeit only a dent) Clearly more a club banger.
8: BLOW ME (ONE LAST KISS) - PINK (10) The Philadelphia tough girl returns to form after having her first child. Title appears to be a double entendre.
AT40 2-4-1: GET THIS PARTY STARTED - PINK (2001) The song that moved her away from R&B/Hip Hop towards mainstream pop. An in-your-face classic.
7: PAYPHONE - MAROON 5 featuring WIZ KHALIFA (5) Former AT40 #1 for group making plenty of noise these days.
AT40 SLEAZE: Jennifer Anniston rumors
6: WHISTLE - FLO RIDA (9) My favorite song on the countdown and the best of his three entries this week...and he does it all by himself. Crossing my fingers for this to go to #1.
5: LET'S GO - CALVIN HARRIS featuring NE-YO (7) This guy is a little more managable than David Guetta. Can't really see this song going any higher, though.
4: GIVE YOUR HEART A BREAK - DEMI LOVATO (6) Here's another song that keeps getting a second (& third) wind. Song has taken over 5 months to reach this point, and it might not be done.
3: TITANIUM - DAVID GUETTA featuring SIA (3) It's getting lots of airplay, but I'm just feeling this one, as implied earlier.
AT40 EXTRA: REPLAY - IZAY (2009) Still a catchy number from yesteryear about a 21st Century invention.
2: WIDE AWAKE - KATY PERRY (2) Katy's ninth trip to #1 still maintaining its posture. Better song than previous hit.
1: LIGHTS - ELLIE GOULDING (1) Song has a feel reminiscent of Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn." At least you can dance to this one.
SYNOPSIS: The Eurodance rave sound heard mostly in clubs a decade ago has now become the current style of mainstream Top 40, likely because most music today is made on computers. Also, as stated in a previous chart critique, R&B/Hip Hop songs are not crossing over but the artists are doing so. This signals a danger about to rear its ugly head just like in the latter half of the 1980s where its stars made too many records that no longer appealed to their core fans.
