. . . And it's a typical SXM "hatchet job." Removed all of the AT40 Specials and 90% of Casey's commentary. What fun! (Not!)

That's the reason I don't listen to the early 70's shows on Sirius/XM. To me, even a hacked-up show from my favorite AT40 musical era is better than nothing. And the absence of ads, especially Premiere ones, is always a plus.

'Chart geekery': Two of the debuts on this week's Hot 100 were on Invictus Records, and neither would quite make the 40. The Invictus and Hot Wax labels were Holland-Dozier-Holland's attempt to create a new music 'empire' after they left Motown. But these two releases by two of their signature acts would fall short, perhaps a precursor of trouble to come. "Chairman Of the Board" by Chairmen Of The Board, Invictus' Tempts-4 Tops male vocal group, debuted at #71 but would peter out at 42. And their answer to Miss Ross, Freda Payne, debuted at #85 but wouldn't go higher than 44.
The labels would still have their only #1, "Want Ads' by Honey Cone, as well as near-top 10s by that same group and The 8th Day, later in 1971, but by mid-72 the label's chart days were over.

For the mildly curious, here are the "specials" that were excised: 1. A World Without Love - Peter & Gordon - 1964 2. My Love - Petula Clark - 1966 3. Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan - 1965 4. The Weight - The Band - 1968 I guess I'm not an AT40 purist, as I don't miss these one bit, and feel these hoary oldies just get in the way of the 1971 countdown. And I can see why the "70s on 7" would want them gone. Of interest, however, is Casey's always curious pronunciation of "yesterday," which makes an early appearance here, at the intro of "1900 Yesterdee," and would come to full fruition for the Carpenters' "Yesterdee Once More" a couple years later. Completists here no doubt are familiar with the "Cruisin'" record ads that appeared on many 1971 shows. Other albums were promoted this year as well, and came along as part of the vinyl that was sent to radio stations, including ones by Bill Medley and the Mike Curb Congregation. This week there were 3 (!) - one per hour - for the Eydie Gormé sensation, "It Was A Good Time" (aka Rosy's Theme From "Ryan's Daughter".) Maybe worth mentioning that Medley, Curb and Gormé were all on MGM records at the time, as were the lesser-known "Paul Frees and the Poster People," who also had a commercial on AT40 in 1971. Lastly, it was nice to hear Burt Bacharach honored with the 5th Dimension's "One Less Bell to Answer."

My guess is this show was already in their vaults. Today the extras would most likely be left in.

I don't regard the oldies above as "hoary", but I will note that SXM did the same thing with their 1976 "Wheel of Casey" show Thursday. It had two extras, "Ode to Billie Joe" (1967) which was cut, and "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast" (1972) which was left in. I guess the only versions of these shows they had ready for playing was edited versions aired previously.

Wheel of Casey this week: July 21, 1979. And unlike last week's edits, here we get its full original four hour glory (actually 3:15 sans commercials.) Though it helps that none of the songs predated 1970.

Any clue for today's Noon show? If my recordkeeping is accurate, today should be 1977, which is the only year left without play in 2023?

Episode is from 1972 and promo was introduced by Ann Wilson of Heart. I miss skuncle doing this, but maybe Noon isn't convenient for him.

Exact date is 2-26-72, and this was the week that Melanie had three songs in the Top 40.
