Don't you mean The Jackson Five? Gaynor's remake of the song was from late 1974. No, Gloria Gaynor is who introduced the show this week. SiriusXM has a handful of different artists intro the show every week by saying “Hello, I’m (whoever) and you’re listening to American Too 40 with Casey Kasem. Now let’s go back to this week in 197?” The artist doing the intro doesn’t always have anything to do with the year played. Don't have SiriusXM, so did not know that. Thanks. Kind of a coincidence that the song that Gaynor scored her first hit with is high on this week's '71 show (#2, IIRC) in it's original version.

Along with Ms. Gaynor, other 70's artists who have been doing these introductions of late are Gary Wright, Randy Bachman, Don Felder (of the Eagles), Steve Porcaro (of Toto), and Bill Withers (although being that he's recently deceased, they may drop him). As for Gloria Gaynor's remake of "Never Can Say Goodbye", I love it; it has far more energy and sizzle than the Jackson 5 original. I especially love the swirling strings that open the song and make an encore towards the end. It's definitely one of my top ten favorite disco songs.

In another bit of trivia regarding "Casey-isms," over the years Casey introduced Bachman-Turner Overdrive & he pronounced Randy Bachman as "BOCK-man." Then at one point Casey announced that Randy told the AT40 staff they had been mispronouncing Bachman as BOCK-man and that it should be pronounced as "BACK-man." So Casey started pronouncing Randy's name and the name of the group as "BACK-man." Now fast forward to Randy Bachman doing his recorded intros for AT40 The 70s on Sirius-XM. Guess what? He said "Hi this is Randy BOCK-man" in his intros. Go figure.

In what seems to be a pattern, they again mixed up two songs in the first hour (#37 and 36 were played in reverse order.) The introductory replay of last week's top 3 was cut, though of course the same songs appeared later (with a better segue than we've often heard when SXM does that.) Pretty much everything else seems there, including the "Is that Stevie Nicks?" story regarding a sped-up version of Atlanta Rhythm Section's "Imaginary Lover".

I mentioned last week that swapping the order of songs in the 30's seems to be such a regular thing that I think it is being done on purpose--I guess at least they are editing the shows less than they used to (maybe that's the trade off).

In fact, decades later when Tal Bachman had a hit, Casey pronounced his name as TAAL BACK-man, even though the only other person I ever knew with that first name pronounced it as TAHL.

This week Sirius XM got AT40 right: everything from the original show was played, including an extra from the 1960s, and it was all in order (no songs switched out of place.)

In an unexpected return to form, SiriusXM 70's and Seven announced this weekend's show today, right around lunchtime! June 26, 1976. It is a great show, with lots of variety, as you'd expect. It has one of those songs that bounced in and out and back in to the #1 spot, and it also was a good week for a certain ex-Beatle! If you would like to follow along using the script that went out to all the radio stations that played the show back in '76, here is a link to view that cue sheet: www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/06-26-76.pdfAnd if you'd like to see the Billboard Hot 100 for that week, to check on what songs had dropped off of the countdown, and what songs were headed towards the Top 40, here is that link: www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100/1976-06-25Here's hoping that SiriusXM continues this trend of announcing the shows in advance of the weekend. Enjoy! Here's Casey in 1976 with DJ Sonny Melendrez, a frequent guest host:
