Interesting thread, enough that I feel compelled to comment. I was 14 in the early part of 1975 when I began keeping my own personal top 20. Did it every week until the early 80's,when I expanded it to a Top 30 until the late 80's. Eventually,I just didn't hear enough new music, and got away from compiling the charts. but I did hang on to all of them, and its fun to go back and look at what was popular for me personally all those years ago. I consider myself a chart geek, and had other friends that also did the same. Just reading this thread lets me know that I was not alone...

If you still have those charts you might want to check out the thread called "Post Your Chart From 1980 - 1991" in the Pulse Music Message Board. Every week all who charted during this time span posts their old Top 40 charts to correspond to the classic American Top 40 program with Casey Kasem that Premiere radio network is airing.
We just finished posting our charts from September 8, 1984 and this weekend will be charts from September 9, 1980 and also a bonus date of September 15, 1990 since Classic AT40 does not cover that year.
Fascinating results with some songs that never even made the Billboard Hot 100. This past weekend marked the first time that everyone had the same song in their top 10 on the same chart date (9/8/84). "She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper. You'll have to check to see if you continued that trend with your chart.

OK...I will embrace my inner geek and admit that I, too, compiled a weekly Top 40 chart — from about early 1983 until about 1988.
My charts usually were close enough to the AT40, but I also had some songs that didn't make the charts in Billboard's Top 40. Usually, they were songs that just didn't catch mass appeal, and only peaked somewhere closer to 50 or 60.
I'll post one of my charts when we get back into regular weekly countdowns.

and I thought I was the only 'nutcase' who ever did this. i used to write them down starting in 83 but i threw them out long time ago. what i can remember was Der Kommissar was #1 on my countdown for 18 weeks.

Man did I hit the roof those weeks it hit #1. I was so devastated when Der Kommisar fell from 5 to 10 the week it peeked. Man I feel like I geek now.

Lol..we are all geeks and proud of it. I remember I was mad in early 1983 when "Hungry Like The Wolf" (one of my all time favorites) always stayed a notch behind "Do You Really Want To Hurt me" every freakin week. It could never pass it. I always hated Boy George for this....lol.

I was so devastated when Der Kommisar fell from 5 to 10 the week it peeked. Ha. I know that exact 5-10 feeling. At the time, Cyndi Lauper's All Through the Night had been my favorite song ever, and was perched well atop my personal chart. I was so sure it was going to #1. I tuned in to Casey's America's Top 10 the Saturday after it had moved to #5, and was horrified when it was the first clip played. As for the songs that topped both Billboard and my charts: Jesse's Girl Come On Eileen The Reflex A View To a Kill Shout With or Without You

Growing up in Singapore, our local radio stations would occasionally play music popular in the UK, sometimes these songs would be popular months before they hit the US charts. So when I complied my charts back in the late 70s and early 80s, it would be a combination of songs from these two countries. However, since the radio stations tend to skew their playlists towards the US charts, a song that was popular in the UK months ago and got played then would receive airplay again when it hit big in the US. I didn't like duplicity in my charts so I refused to list those songs again on my personal chart...lol.

September 8. 1983 ..1.......2..........9.......Words..(F.R..David) The number one song was an international hit and what a disappointment that the United States generally missed out on it. If it would have made AT40 it would have been interesting to hear Casey mention how many countries it had gone to #1 in. I loved this song! It definitely didn't get the exposure that it deserved. It was a pretty good-sized AC hit (and WTHQ in South Bend played the song often). This song peaked at #2 on my personal chart in September, 1983, held out of #1 by "Blame It On Love" by Smokey Robinson & Barbara Mitchell.

I wish I still had my personal charts (late '70's to early '80's). I found a few. One from summer of '82 was "expanded" to include imports and LP tracks, as I was REALLY into UK post-punk/new wave. I loved '82/'83, because a lot of those artists finally started breaking into the AT40.

Well, I wish I was that independent with my charts. Mine usually followed closer to Billboard's Hot 100 (or actually AT40, since I started by listening to Casey and only later started buying Billboard).
Here's my chart from this week in 1984: February 3, 1984
1 | 1 | 10 | KARMA CHAMELEON - Culture Club (Weeks at No 1: 3) 2 | 6 | 13 | I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues - Elton John 3 | 2 | 9 | Think of Laura - Christopher Cross 4 | 5 | 11 | That's All - Genesis 5 | 7 | 7 | Joanna - Kool & the Gang 6 | 3 | 9 | Talking in Your Sleep - The Romantics 7 | 8 | 8 | An Innocent Man - Billy Joel 8 | 4 | 13 | Owner of a Lonely Heart - Yes 9 | 22 | 3 | Let the Music Play - Shannon 10 | 14 | 12 | Thriller - Michael Jackson
Other notable movers that week: Girls Just Want to Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper (debut at 24) Bang Your Head (Mental Health) - Quiet Riot (debut at 27)
and The Curly Shuffle - Jump in the Saddle took a bad drop from 9 to 28.
(man, I'm a geek!)

You want to talk geeky?? I just found a "radio survey" that I took for the week of 8/12/79. Not sure how I did it, but I kept track (for a week) of the times a song was heard on the radio! I think I kept changing around to different stations. Here were the "most played" that week: 1. THE KNACK - My Sharona (20 plays) 2. BARBRA STREISAND - Main Event (19 plays) 3. LITTLE RIVER BAND - Lonesome Loser (16 plays) 4. THE CARS - Let's Go (15 plays) 4. EARTH, WIND & FIRE - After The Love Has Gone (15 plays) 6. ELO - Don't Bring Me Down (14 plays) 7. SUPERTRAMP - Goodbye Stranger (12 plays) 8. CHARLIE DANIELS BAND - The Devil Went Down To Georgia (11 plays) 9. ROBERT PALMER - Bad Case of Loving You (10 plays) 10.RICKI LEE JONES - Youngblood (9 plays)
Bizarre!!! It's the only one of it's kind I could find!

I also created airplay charts in 1972 and again in 1975. I would survey as many radio stations as I could find on the AM dial (and I was amazed just how many stations I could pick up late at night).

I cant believe I found this thread. I thought that I was the only one in the world keeping my own charts back in the day! Mine were favourite tunes that I either liked or would stick in my mind all week long. Although I considered myself more of a Rock fan, I did not discriminate against pop, disco or soul tunes and there may have been Canadian tunes included that did not chart south of the border.
I still have my charts and consider them somewhat of a treasure keeping memories from the 70's alive.
My chart run was over 4 years starting Jun 17, 1977 and it ran until Oct 17, 1981. It ended once I was in College and suddenly found that my study time was eating away at many former leisure activities.
I kept them in coat sized pocket day time calendars that my Dad had bought. Each booklet contained 31 pages and I ended up with 8 booklets containing a total of 227 weekly charts and yes each one was numbered! Talk about being a geek. After chart 31, I expanded from keeping a Top 30 to a Top 40.
Anyway heres a top 10 sample from week of Mar 17, 1978
TW|LW|W |Song-Artist
1|5|7| I Go Crazy - Paul Davis 2|2|7| Happy Anniversay - Little River Band 3|4|4| Can't smile Without You - Barry Manilow 4|15|4| Runnin on Empty - Jackson Brown 5|17|5| Thunder Island - Jay Ferguson 6|6|9| The Circle is Small - Gordon Lightfoot 7|8|7| Name of the Game - ABBA 8|15|3| Jack And Jill - Raydio 9|20|4| The Goodbye Girl - David Gates 10|3|7| Lay Down Sally - Eric Clapton
