First of all, this is just rumor, and is not yet officially confirmed. But I read through a source of (usual) confidence on another message board that Rick Dees is starting a new AC countdown soon, and that many of the stations which carried AT10 will now be switching to this one. No more details have been given.
Thoughts?

Frankly,I can't envision Rick Dees hosting a weekly countdown that would be carried by stations that have an AC format-Mike Kasem or Ed Mc Mann would be a better choice.

Frankly, I think a straight AC countdown would be pretty boring, given the near glacial pace of change on that chart. What made AT10 enjoyable was, in addition to Casey hosting, that he played so much else besides that week's AC hits, with the thematic "spotlights", assorted extras with interesting facts behind them, Long Distance Dedications, and such. In fact, AT10 seemed to me to be more of an afternoon with Casey Kasem first, and secondarily a countdown; only about a third of the time was spent actually counting down that week's AC hits.
Even an often entertaining host like Rick Dees can only do so much to enliven a countdown where three month runs at #1 and year long chart stays aren't unusual. If he or someone else tries a similar show to AT10 it would be a lot more interesting if they strayed from the chart script and put in a lot of oldies and extras.

According to what we can hear through the AC demo on the ABC website, it will be a Top 30. Seeing that AT10 had a 3-hour length, I guess we are in for a straight countdown show.

In the ABC news article abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=8007180&page=1, one of the reasons stated for Casey's decision to leave was the lack of turnover on the AC chart. Being that Love Story is closing in on 90 weeks on the Hot AC chart, one can only imagine what old stuff we will wind up hearing on an AC top 30. Casey kept AT 10 fresh by featuring so many older hits. Will a top 30 countdown really keep the interest of the typical AC listener (not the fans gathered around this board)? I have my doubts.

Interesting...news to me, but we'll see what develops. It'd be ironic if Dees ends up "replacing" Casey.

If Dees does host an AC countdown, would the chart data come directly from Mediabase?

Putting aside any other speculations, I think that Dees having an AC countdown actually makes total sense. Look, Dees started his show in September of 1983. He was 33 - just slightly older than Seacrest when he took AT40's reigns, definitely younger than both Kasem or Shadoe when they started their respective eras. He's now 59. More importantly, it's a sure bet that even the audience which was in its teens back when he started the WT40 in the mid-80's now squarely fits into AC's target age demo. There are other factors. Dees was the only one who truly ever presented a challenge to Kasem over the years in the ratings/affiliates numbers game. Besides Kasem, he's the only other name people would readily associate with countdown shows if asked randomly. Finally, it's commonly accepted that Dees' style hasn't evolved much since the 80's, just like Kasem basically stuck to his guns over the years. And since AC radio has actually started welcoming more uptempo/heavier music as of late, Dees' style might actually fit better now than it did not even five years ago. If this is true, I think he can definitely succeed.

If Dees does host an AC countdown, would the chart data come directly from Mediabase? I don't think so. Rick has been using his own charts for CHR and HAC shows. Charts might be based on his affiliates airplay (but, as far as I know, noone really is sure of that), so I guess even AC would be the same... And one more reason for Rick not using Mediabase could be that MB is Clear Channel owned, as well as Premiere, and I would guess that Rick doesn't have very plesent memories of departure from Premiere.

Most likely he would probably use his own charts. Some Pulse Music posters call Rick's countdown "the dartboard chart", but he's usually not too far off from what other CHR/AC charts (used by Kasem, Seacrest, etc.) say. However, unless he still wants to be counting down "I'm Yours" and "Love Story" well into 2010 he might want to have a recurrent rule in place. Alternatively, might he go "back to the future" and use Billboard? As far as I know there hasn't been a major national Billboard-based countdown since Shadoe's AT40 was cancelled.

As far as I know there hasn't been a major national Billboard-based countdown since Shadoe's AT40 was cancelled. Not for pop or AC, but American Country Countdown used the official Billboard chart at least as long as Bob Kingsley hosted it. I don't know if the Kix Brooks version of ACC still uses Billboard because I don't listen to it.

From looking at the ACC web site, Kix Brooks does use Billboard's charts. Bob Kingsley has used Mediabase's charts on his current show.

There used to be an online show called the "Billboard Radio Countdown", but unfortunately that was discontinued about 4 years ago.

The site www.rick.com/show/hot-adult-07-18-2009 actually lists the Top 40 Hot Adult. If you take a look at the top 20 positions you will find all the songs that were featured in the last original American Top 20 with Casey Kasem. Stations will only have to cancel one hour of original programming on weekends and they can fill the empty American Top 20 slot with Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40. For AT40 veterans who have been listening since the 1980s this is a more convenient way to hear current songs than listening to Ryan Seacrest.
