I'm curious what will happen at the end of this year (Dees, Casey, Seacrest), in terms of what end of year/decade shows we'll hear.
Surely Rick Dees will do an end of the decade show. But Rick these days seems to take 3 weekends off at the end of the year. This past year he did the top100 of the year the last 2 weekends of the year an 1st week of the new year was another special "Biggest hits of the past 4 years." So in theory he MIGHT do a top40 of 2009 followed by a top 80 or 100 of the decade. Wishfull thinking probably......
But what about Casey an Ryan? Will Casey do a top30 of the year on AT20 followed by a top30 of the decade? Is that how he did it at the end of the 90s?? Don't recall listening to the AT20 show back then, was busy recording the AT40 one. I can't imagine he'd do a 3 week special but I can dream. What about Ryan? do the same as what Casey did at the end of the 90s? A top40 of the year an top40 of the decade? Or perhaps a top50?
Curious of your thoughts on this....

I think Rick will do a top 100 of 2009 the last 2 weeks of 2009, then the first week of 2010 he'll do a top 40 of the decade (as the past few years, he's done #1 hits of the past few years). I think Casey will do a top 30 (or even a top 35) of both the year and the decade, while Ryan will only do a year-end.

I remember in December 1989 Casey did a CT40 special of the top 40 hits of the 80s, according to Radio and Records, so I think he may well do a special AT20; not sure of AT10.
I'd expect a special Dees presentation of the decade's top hits. Probably not a similar Seacrest show, since, assuming the top 100 of 2009 is spread over two shows, AT40 probably won't want three straight weeks of deviations from the week's current countdown.

Casey has never failed to do an "end of the decade" countdown, so why would he forget this time? On the first week of Jan 1980, he counted down the Top 50 of the 1970s. In July 1987, AT40 "just couldn't wait until the end of the decade" and counted down the Top 40 hits of the 1980s so far. In 1989 and 1990, Casey's Top 40 did several different versions of the top hits of the 1980s (Million Sellers, Top #1s, Dance, British, etc. ). In late December 1995, Casey's Top 40 counted down the "Top 35 Hits of the 1990s" so far.
After AT40 returned in 1998, they continued the tradition of doing end of the decade surveys. In Dec 1999-Jan 2000 AT40 and both the AC and HAC versions of AT20 did them (for AT40 there was a "Top 40 of the 1990s" and for the AT20 shows there were "Top 30 of the 1990s" shows.
On the other hand, AT40 never did an "end of the decade" survey while Shadoe was host (there were other specials, however). As silly as Ryan acts on AT40 now, there is some tendency to stick with precident as established during the Casey years, so the chances of an "end of decade" special would probably be greater than during the Shadoe years.
I'm not as sure about Rick's plans, but in 1999, he hosted a two week "Millenium countdown" which was actually a Top 80 of the 1990s. I don't know if he did a decade end countdown for the 1980s, however.
One thing, I have seen, is that AT40 and the AC and HAC shows will cut down the length of the end of year countdown to accomodate the inclusion of an end of decade countdown. For this reason, the end of year for 1979 was cut to 50 positions instead of 100, CT40 only counted down the Top 40 of 1989, the 1999 year end was only 40 positions (AT40) or 30 positions (both versions of AT20). Perhaps something similar will occur this year.
Also with the way that Premiere tends to celebrate the anniversaries of the first AT40 in July, I wonder if they will celebrate the 40th anniversary of AT40 in 2010 with a countdown of the Top 40 songs of AT40?

With tight playlists and the radio mentality of 2009, my guess is we will not see too much in the ways of specialty countdowns.
My guess is Dees will do his typical 2 week long Top 100, and then the first countdown of 2010 will be a "Top Hits of the Decade" that will be very similar the the "Top Hits of the Last 4 Years" shows he has been doing for a while now on that first show back from the Year End.
Casey could go either way. Given the fact that there has not been any sort of "special" countdown done by Casey in the last 10 years outside of the year-enders, my guess is for AT20 that the annual Top 60 will be the norm. I could see AT10 doing a spotlight on the decade during the first show after the Holiday and Year End break. While I would LOVE to hear Casey count down the top hits of the decade for both formats, I'm not going to hold my breath on it. Radio just isn't the same these days, and Premiere has to make the affiliates happy.
As for Seacrest, with as tight as CHR/Pop playlists are these days, my guess is the annual Top 100 for the CHR/Pop show will be the norm. I can't see affiliates wanting four hours of air time clogged up with songs they haven't spun in years. And if the CHR/Pop show is business as usual, I'm sure the annual Top 50 for the Hot AC show would be the same.
Again, with the state of radio in 2009, I am not expecting anything outside of the usual Year End Countdowns. Dees will probably do a dartboard decade chart. But, I would love for Casey to do a Top 30 of the decade, even if it meant trimming the year end show to one week and just the Top 30.

I can see AT10 and AT20 doing an end-of-decade show. AC and Hot AC are recurrent-friendly and shouldn't have a problem airing 30 songs from 2000-2009. On average, it's each year's Top 3, which is hardly taxing on either format.
I agree totally about the thought of Rick's dartboard chart. I'm interested in seeing what craziness he does for Hot AC, as those shows ofter bear too much of a resemblance to their Pop counterparts.
Now for Ryan. While I don't see him doing a whole special, I don't see him totally ignoring it either. Perhaps he'll devote a segment of a weekly or year-end show to play snippets of the Top 5 hits of the 2000s (although that means we might not get to hear what's going on with Dr. Phil or Michelle Obama that week, gasp!).
