Last week's episode of "AT40-The 80"s" featured a letter in which a listener asked what song or songs took the longest time to reach #1 on the Billboard "Hot 100"-Casey said there were two songs that achieved that feat:"Hot Child In The City"-Nick Gilder (1978) & "Sad Eyes"-Robert John (1979)-However,I tend to think there were other songs that took forever to reach #1-Can anyone help me out here?

Two months later (May 1982) Vangelis' "Chariots Of Fire" hit #1 in its 22nd week on the chart--two weeks more than the late 1970s hits that Casey noted.
There may have been others since that have taken longer, but that's the longest one I can think of from when the Hot 100 was a more or less definitive chart. Of course, if you take Radio/Records, Mediabase, etc. into account there may be other possibilities.

I just happened to think of another chart topper from 1975,which falls into this category:"Before The Next Teardrop Falls" by Freddy Fender debuted on the "Hot 100" on 2/1/75-I remember hearing it when it debuted on "AT40" on 3/8/75-"Before The Next Teardrop Falls" finally hit the top of the chart in May 1975-That's a total of three months.

Here are a few more slow climbers from the pre-Soundscan era:
Love Machine - Miracles (20 weeks) 1976 A Fifth Of Beethoven - Walter Murphy (20 weeks) 1976 Please Don't Go - KC & the Sunshine Band (20 weeks) 1980 Don't Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston (19 weeks) 1977 Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield (19 weeks) 1981
Not counting songs that charted, fell off and recharted such as "Baby Come To Me" or "I Am Woman" , "Chariots of Fire" does hold the pre-Soundscan record for slowest climb to #1.

I just happened to think of another slow climber that made it to #1:"Dancing Queen" by Abba-It debuted on the "Hot 100" in December 1976 & reached the top spot in April 1977-That was a total of five months.
