Most kids have no idea to make a phone call with a dial telephone eithier. Things do change. That's why there's a thing as nostalgia.
The golden era of the countdown shows was the 80s to me. There was a bumper crop of At40 clones, and all have died except Rick Dees WT40.
The fragmentation of charts are a reflection of how technology has changed the way we listen to music. from downloads, to brick and mortar music store sales, things have come a long way in the last 25 years. most music store chains have died here in canada, HMV survives, but how much longer?
Countdown shows maybe a dying trend, but time will tell. Hopefully AT40 will last another 40 years.
The trend these days is more towards celebrity shenanigans and foolishness then sincere unique story that Kasem has trademarked for decades. It's the world of the superficial for the younger demo. If you want the show to survive, you have to adjust.
As said before, Seacrest was the right choice at the time for AT40's new host. Now, I'm not so sure. Even within a tight format, you can have a degree of sincerity and connection with the listener. I don't hear that within seacrest. he sounds more like a superficial rick dees, using dees style of laugh at anything interns in the background of the studio that comes off really lame. It's not unique. With Casey, AT 40 was unique. it's lost that. Seacrest really sounds like he's just getting the job done and wants to move to the next task of the day.
Seacrest is too busy trying to be the next Dick Clark, that quality can go in the dumper for quantity. He's doing the KIIS morning show, he's voice tracking the 4 hour 5 day a week "On the Air with Ryan Seacrest" about 4 breaks/hour, and obviously AT40, and all his TV hosting chores. I think the guy will burn himself in the not too distant future. Casey stuck primarily to one show. Even Dick Clark wasn't this bad.
