Apr 20, 1974 (aired on SXM Channel 7 on Saturday 25 April 2009) This week's countdown includes quite a few of the most annoying songs ever to make the Top 40. Here are the songs I would include in that list: #37: Oh Very Young – Cat Stevens (debut) #34: The Payback (Part 1) – James Brown (up 5 from #39 last week) #33: Help Me – Joni Mitchell (debut) #32: I’m a Train – Albert Hammond (up 8 from debuting at #40 last week) #18: Mockingbird – Carly Simon & James Taylor (falls 8 from #10 last week) #17: Keep on Singing – Helen Reddy (up 4 from #21 last week) #14: Seasons in the Sun – Terry Jacks (falls 6 from #8 last week) #8: The Loco-Motion – Grand Funk (up 9 from #17 last week) #3: Hooked on a Feeling – Blue Swede (falls 1 from #2 last week) What do you think? I agree on most of those, except I like "Oh Very Young" and "Help Me", and I find it hard to dislike a James Brown song, even if they mostly sounded similar by that point. I can tolerate "Seasons In the Sun", but think none of the three cover versions of earlier hits listed is nearly as good as the originals (though the Blue Swede recording would be decent on its own without the silly "ooga-chagga" chant.) I will add that I cannot stand "The Show Must Go On", which jumped from 29 to 19, eventually to peak at #4. Most everything else in that countdown ranges from tolerable to excellent.

#27-"Jet"-Paul Mc Cartney & Wings-1974 This was the second release from the "Band On The Run" album & a great rocker "Jet" was actually the first "official" release from the album. "Helen Wheels" predated the release of the album and was never intended to be included in the album. In the UK, it was not included on the "Band Of The Run" album. In the US, it was added on.

#1-"TSOP"-MFSB-The original theme from the long running TV series "Soul Train"-A great instrumental to boot. It was not the original theme from the Soul Train TV series. The original theme was "Hot Potatoes" by King Curtis. The "TSOP" theme replaced the original theme in 1973.

Phil Collins - One More Night (4) - I like this but I prefer the other "No Jacket Required" singles 10. Animotion - Obsession (7) - great song! An 80's mix show essential 6. Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok (9) - the intro gives this a theatrical feel (appropriate as it's from a musical)... one of my favourites of 1985! 5. Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me) (8) - great song! You guessed it, another 80's mix show essential 4. The Commodores - Nightshift (3) - one of my favourites from them overall, and out of the two Marvin Gaye tributes on here, the one I like more LDD: REO Speedwagon - Keep On Loving You - great song! Another one of my favourites from them, they really excel at power ballads 3. DeBarge - Rhythm Of The Night (5) - good song! A nice departure from their ballads despite being written by Diane Warren who normally writes ballads! 2. Madonna - Crazy For You (2) - good song! But I prefer many others from her 1. USA For Africa - We Are The World (1) - great song! A bunch of huge stars all on one track for a good cause, they definitely left a lasting impression!

I haven't done one of these in forever!!! 40. Julian Lennon - Say You're Wrong (debut)- not as well known as his other solo hits, but I like the fact that it's pretty rockish-sounding. 39. New Edition - Lost In Love (debut) - In the words of freakyflybry, NO, just NO!!!! 38. Luther Vandross - Til My Baby Comes Home (debut) - A pretty nice uptempo song from him, and the only other one I know was that duet he did with Janet Jackson in 1992, whose title escapes me at the moment. 37. Bryan Adams - Somebody (18) - really good song that I'm surprised didn't peak as high as his other big hits. 36. REO Speedwagon - Can't Fight This Feeling (23) - A great song!! And one of my faves from the 80s! 35. Bryan Adams - Heaven (debut) - Beautiful, but I found out about this one after hearing the DJ Sammy version of 2002. Still, I love both versions. 34. Katrina & the Waves - Walking On Sunshine (40) - A very uplifting song. Leaves me feeling fancy-free 33. Rick Springfield - Celebrate Youth (39) - Pretty cool, but not one that would have stuck out in my mind if I was alive in the 80s. 32. REO Speedwagon - One Lonely Night (38) - The second REO song on the show? Wow! Not as good as their previous one, but it's still a very decent song. 31. Mary Jane Girls - In My House (debut) - This one doesn't really get me too excited. 30. Kenny Loggins - Vox Humana (33) - Very different sounding. He's had much better. 29. David Lee Roth - Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody (35) - Over-the-top, but still fun! One part of the song was on the "Spongebob Sqaurepants Movie" a few years back. 28. Howard Jones - Things Can Only Get Better (37) - One of my faves from this decade, I'm tellin ya!! LDD: Heatwave - Always And Forever - don't really like this one a whole lot 27. Kool & the Gang - Fresh (34) - I don't think they ever went wrong when making funky dance tunes!! 26. Eric Clapton - Forever Man (27) - A good song that I thought sounded a bit more different than his past tunes. 25. Teena Marie - Lovergirl (15) - A great song!! She didn't really have a whole lot of success on the pop charts after this though. 24. Billy Ocean - Suddenly (29) - Not big on his ballads, but I'll let this one go. 23. Madonna - Material Girl (13) - Another song that makes me all dancey inside for some weird reason 22. Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F (30) - A really great song!! Nice to see instrumentals getting represented!! 21. Patti LaBelle - New Attitude (24) - Another nice dance song!! That's two in a row from "Beverly Hills Cop"! 20. John Fogerty - Rock & Roll Girls (22) - No. I like his CCR stuff more. Still, I have a soft spot for "Centerfield", which didn't even chart. 19. Hall & Oates - Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid (21) - To me, underrated 18. Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World (26) - Yet another of the most recognizable songs of the '80s. I'll never get tired of it. 17. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Don't Come Around Here No More (20) - The video was rather bizarre, and I'll admit it scared me a bit when I was little. It's still a fun song. 16. Wham! - Everything She Wants (19) - Great song!!! One of Amy Lee from Evanescence's faves, from what I read. 15. Foreigner - That Was Yesterday (17) - They had better. I really rather their rock-sounding stuff. 14. Chicago - Along Comes A Woman (14) - A nice uptempo song from them. I just learned more about the band in Music 303, back when they had a more jazz-rock sound. 13. Diana Ross - Missing You (10) - A very pretty tribute to Marvin Gaye! 12. Sade - Smooth Operator (16) - Not a big Sade fan to be honest 11. Phil Collins - One More Night (4) - Too slow for me; I prefer the faster songs from that album. 10. Don Henley - All She Wants To Do Is Dance (11) - An enjoyable and really cool song with a rather not-as-light-hearted message. 9. Bruce Springsteen - I'm On Fire (9) - Short, but sweet. 8. The Power Station - Some Like It Hot (12) - This song is HOT!!!! no pun intended 7. Animotion - Obsession (7) - A great one, but I like their other big hit "Room to Move" a bit more. 6. Murray Head - One Night In Bangkok (9) - Imagine my reaction when I heard this song was from a play about chess. It's a great song, I was just surprised. 5. Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me) (8) - From one of my favorite 80s movies ever, "The Breakfast Club"! This is quintessential stuff right here! 4. The Commodores - Nightshift (3) - A good song, but as I said before, ballads take a while to catch on for me. LDD: REO Speedwagon - Keep On Loving You - 3 REO SONGS IN ONE SHOW?! !?!? lol. Out of all the songs I heard from them, this is my absolute favorite!! 3. DeBarge - Rhythm Of The Night (5) - A very feel-good song that was really deserving for their biggest hit! 2. Madonna - Crazy For You (2) - I imagine myself alone while everybody else is dancing when I hear this song. Very sad. Very sad indeed. 1. USA For Africa - We Are The World (1) - A really good one, I must say. And for a good cause as well, so double whammy!

38. Luther Vandross - Til My Baby Comes Home (debut) - A pretty nice uptempo song from him, and the only other one I know was that duet he did with Janet Jackson in 1992, whose title escapes me at the moment. It was "The Best Things In Life Are Free", which I really like myself. "Never Too Much", his first hit from 1981, was also uptempo.

Hearing "TSOP" on today's AT40 rebroadcast, I couldn't help but think of how the song reminds me of the AT40 "Shuckatoom Theme" whenever I hear "TSOP" these days. Anyone else out there notice that?

Quote from FreakyFlybry:
The Time - The Bird (36) - wtf did this sound like again?
The song opens with the words WHAT TIME IS IT?!
Then says AMERICA, HAVE YOU HEARD, THERE'S A BRAND NEW DANCE, IT'S CALLED THE BIRD!!!
Morris Day sings it in PURPLE RAIN right before Prince sings the title song at the nightclub they perform at.
If you followed professional wrestling (like I did), that song was the theme song for grappler KoKo B. Ware.

Quote from Mr. Jukebox:
"Star Baby"-The Guess Who-An overlooked gem from this Canadian group-Should've been a much bigger hit
Great song, while it only stayed in the Billboard national countdown for one week, it was a heavily played song on KYNO radio in my hometown of Fresno, CA. I believe it made top 10.

This weekend, they did the April 28, 1984 show - the first repeat show from that year. But it was new to me, as I didn't listen to American Top 40 back in 1984, and didn't discover that the Flashback show aired on a station in my area until August, 2007. Anyway, here's my commentary on the show:
Droppers: RUNAWAY - BON JOVI (39) - OK song, but I prefer several others by them - mostly their slow and mid-tempo hits. COME BACK AND STAY (38) - PAUL YOUNG - This one was also kind of annoying. I preferred most of his other hits. RADIO GA-GA - QUEEN (35) - I did not like this song at all, so I was glad it fell off I WANT A NEW DRUG - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS (21) - Wow, this song fell from really high up! Anyway, it’s a pretty good song - we heard it on the last Flashback show, I believe.
40: THE HEART OF ROCK 'N' ROLL (debut) - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS - And, as they fall out of the survey with their older song, it's replaced by their latest. It's an OK song, but they’ve had many better. 39: IT'S MY LIFE - TALK TALK (40) - Good song, but I prefer No Doubt’s remake. 38: ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE - SCORPIONS (debut) - Good song, though I like their two 1991 hits better (as well as “No One Like You” from two years before). 37: WHITE HORSE - LAID BACK (debut) - No. Just no. 36: THE REFLEX - DURAN DURAN (debut) - Definitely one of my least favorite songs by them. They played the version that didn’t start with the annoying “Sha-la-la-la, The Reflex” stuff. 35: BORDERLINE - MADONNA (37) - Love this song! One of my favorites by her! And they played the long version of it (with the longer choruses) 34: HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO - BONNIE TYLER (34) - OK, but I prefer “Total Eclipse Of The Heart”. 33: GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN - CYNDI LAUPER (17) - Wow, what a big drop! Anyway, this song was a good one. 32: EAT IT - WEIRD AL YANKOVIC (15) - Another big drop, but novelty hits tend to do that. 31: I'LL WAIT - VAN HALEN (33) - I liked this - sounded like typical classic rock material from the early-mid-80s. Much better than their other song on the show. 30: SISTER CHRISTIAN - NIGHT RANGER (32) - I like this song. One of my favorites from them. 29: SHOW ME - THE PRETENDERS (29) - Good song, like most of their hits. 28: NO MORE WORDS - BERLIN (31) - Meh, not much for this song. I prefer “Take My Breath Away” 27: TIME AFTER TIME - CYNDI LAUPER (36) - Not a big fan of this one either. I preferred INOJ’s remake from the late 90s. 26: DANCING IN THE SHEETS - SHALAMAR (30) - This was OK, but possibly my least favorite song from them. I preferred “The Second Time Around”. 25: A FINE FINE DAY - TONY CAREY (28) - Great song - possibly my favorite on the entire show. Too bad he didn’t have too many hits. His only other Top 40 hit was “The First Day Of Summer” which, as I recall, was a pretty good song. 24: LEAVE IT - YES (24) - OK song. I’m not really a big Yes fan, however. 23: JUMP - VAN HALEN (14) - Ugh, this isn’t a song! Sounds more like an intro to a sporting event! How the hell did this manage to spend five weeks at #1? 22: BREAKDANCE - IRENE CARA (26) - No. Just no. (Is it me, or does this sound a lot like “No More Words”?) LDD: FAITHFULLY - JOURNEY - Very sweet dedication, from a brother to his sister. As for the song, it’s a good one, but Journey has had better. The segment in which the LDD was placed was very odd. They played song #23, answered a Question Letter, and then went to #22. I was wondering what happened to the LDD Casey had promised at the end of the last segment, and then, after song #22 was a short “American Top 40" jingle, then the dedication was read. Strange! Moreover, the “Old Radio Shows” website listed the LDD between songs #34 and #33. EDIT: I found out that's where the LDD on the original show was; Premiere just moved it to the end of Hour 2, so that's why that particular segment was so weird. 21: THE LONGEST TIME - BILLY JOEL (25) - Great song! I like the doo wop style of this song. His “An Innocent Man” album had a wide variety of musical styles. 20: GIRLS - DWIGHT TWILLEY (16) - I like this one! A good rock tune. 19: THE AUTHORITY SONG (22) - JOHN COUGAR MELLANCAMP - Fun song. 18: HERE COMES THE RAIN AGAIN - THE EURYTHMICS (9) - Good song. I prefer it over their first two Top 40 hits. My favorite from them, of course, was “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)”. 17: OH SHERRIE - STEVE PERRY (27) - The first solo hit for the former lead singer of Journey (though he was still with the group at the time). It’s a good song. Funny misheard lyric story: Many years ago, when my Dad and I were driving back home from the grocery store, this song was playing and he thought Steve was saying “Oh Sherrie, I love Bozo” LOL! 16: DON'T ANSWER ME - ALAN PARSONS PROJECT (19) - Pretty good song, but I prefer most of their other 80s songs. 15: ADULT EDUCATION - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES (12) - Good song, but I prefer many other songs by them. 14: TONIGHT - KOOL & THE GANG (18) - OK song, but far from being my favorite from them. I preferred hits like “Too Hot” and “Joanna”. 13: HEAD OVER HEELS - THE GO-GO'S (20) - Good song, even though I’m not a huge fan of the Go-Go’s. 12: LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE BOY (23) - DENIECE WILLIAMS - Good song, even though it was quite overplayed in the late spring of 1984. But now you don’t hear it much anymore. 11: SOMEBODY'S WATCHING ME (7) - ROCKWELL - Good song. 10: TO ALL THE GIRLS I'VE LOVED BEFORE - JULIO IGLESIAS AND WILLIE NELSON (13) - This song’s OK, but somewhat cheesy. 9: AUTOMATIC (6) - THE POINTER SISTERS - This was OK, but I preferred their songs from the earlier 80s. 8: THEY DON'T KNOW (10) - TRACEY ULLMAN - Great song! Despite hitting the Top Ten, it has since faded into obscurity. 7: YOU MIGHT THINK - THE CARS (11) - Good song, but I preferred their next release off of Heartbeat City. 6: LOVE SOMEBODY - RICK SPRINGFIELD (8) - I like this song - one of my favorites by him. The beginning of this song sounds much like Bob Seger’s “Rock And Roll Never Forgets”. 5: MISS ME BLIND - CULTURE CLUB (5) - Pretty good song. Sadly, this was their last Top Ten hit - on AT40 anyway (Their next release, “It’s A Miracle” did hit the Top Ten on the R&R chart) LDD: BEGINNINGS - CHICAGO - This song was OK, but far from being my favorite by Chicago. 4: HOLD ME NOW - THOMPSON TWINS (4) - Great song - my favorite from them. It has been said that the Question Letter that Casey gets the most is about songs hitting #1, falling out and then returning to the top. Well, the one asking about the longest fall from #1 can’t be very far behind, as I’ve heard it on several AT40 shows. That question was answered at this point in the show. 3: FOOTLOOSE - KENNY LOGGINS (2) - This song’s OK, but rather overplayed. I liked Kenny’s other song from Footloose. They edited this song down, taking out the bridge. 2: HELLO - LIONEL RICHIE (3) - Casey mentioned that this song might hit the top and, indeed it did, two weeks later. I was glad, because this song was a good one. It didn’t quite hit #1 on R&R, as it was first edged out of #1 by “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins and then the next week, “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” by Deneice Williams leapfrogged over it. But it ended up in R&R’s year-end Top Ten which, back then, was somewhat rare. 1: AGAINST ALL ODDS (TAKE A LOOK AT ME NOW) - PHIL COLLINS - Great song! One of his best solo hits. Too bad this just narrowly missed being R&R’s #1 song of 1984, especially considering the crappy song that beat it out.

40. Huey Lewis & the News - The Heart Of Rock 'N Roll (new) - great song! One of my favourites from them 39. Talk Talk - It's My Life (40) - good song but I prefer No Doubt's version 38. Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane (new) - I like this one but prefer "Wind of Change" 37. Laid Back - White Horse (new) - this song is weird but for some reason I like it 36. Duran Duran - The Reflex (new) - great song! One of my favourites from them 35. Madonna - Borderline (37) - I really like this one too but prefer other Madonna songs LDD: Journey - Faithfully - great song! A very fitting LDD in the situation here 34. Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out For A Hero (34) - good song though I prefer "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" 33. Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (17) - great song! An 80's mix show essential 32. Weird Al Yankovic - Eat It (15) - LMAO, Weird Al in the top 40! But this song's classic, definitely one of his best parodies 31. Van Halen - I'll Wait (33) - good song but I prefer many others from them 30. Night Ranger - Sister Christian (32) - great song! My favourite from them 29. The Pretenders - Show Me (29) - I like this one but prefer their other top 40 hits 28. Berlin - No More Words (31) - I like this one, but it seems like it's been forgotten and only "Take My Breath Away" can be heard anymore 27. Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time (36) - great song! Despite all the covers of this, I prefer the original the most 26. Shalamar - Dancing In The Sheets (30) - it's ok but I prefer their previous 2 80's hits 25. Tony Carey - A Fine Fine Day (28) - not bad, but there's definitely been better on the chart 24. Yes - Leave It (24) - kinda odd song, but I like it... still not their best 23. Van Halen - Jump (14) - great song! Another 80's mix show essential, and one of my favourites from them 22. Irene Cara - Breakdance (26) - good song! I prefer her previous hits though 21. Billy Joel - The Longest Time (25) - I like this one, especially how he did all of his own background vocals (as Casey's told the story many times) 20. Dwight Twilley - Girls (16) - I like this one, but again, there's better on the chart 19. John Mellencamp - The Authority Song (22) - good song, but again, he's had better 18. Eurythmics - Here Comes The Rain Again (9) - great song! One of their best 17. Steve Perry - Oh Sherrie (27) - great song! He was just as good solo on this one as he was with Journey 16. Alan Parsons Project - Don't Answer Me (19) - I like this one but prefer their 1981-82 hits 15. Hall & Oates - Adult Education (12) - good song but I like many others from them better 14. Kool & the Gang - Tonight (18) - see what I said for Hall & Oates 13. The Go-Go's - Head Over Heels (20) - great song! One of my favourites from them, hard to believe they just formed a band for the sake of it, without regards to being talented! 12. Deniece Williams - Let's Hear It For The Boy (23) - good song, the only song I like from her 11. Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me (7) - great song! Another 80's mix show essential 10. Julio Iglesias & Willie Nelson - To All The Girls I've Loved Before (13) - No. Just no. 9. Pointer Sisters - Automatic (6) - good song! Still prefer a few others from them 8. Tracey Ullman - They Don't Know (10) - this is pretty decent, still there's better on the chart 7. The Cars - You Might Think (11) - great song! Another 80's mix show essential 6. Rick Springfield - Love Somebody (8) - great song, one of my favourites from him 5. Culture Club - Miss Me Blind (5) - IMO the last of their streak of good songs... I like everything before this, and this, but after this, I don't think they had another good song until "Move Away" LDD: Chicago - Beginnings - good song, pretty typical of the early 70's Chicago sound 4. Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now (4) - good song! One of their best 3. Kenny Loggins - Footloose (2) - great song! One of his best movie hits 2. Lionel Richie - Hello (3) - great song! One of his best ballads 1. Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) (1) - great song! One of his best ever

This week, they did the show from May 3, 1980, so now each year has had two turns so far this year. Moreover, this isn’t a repeat show (in 2007, they played the show from the following week and last year, they did one from late May). So it’s a show that I got to hear for the very first time (even though I wasn’t yet listening to the show in the spring of 2007, I have the show from May 10, since it was a would-be” Flashback show LW#3: ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL – PINK FLOYD LW#2: RIDE LIKE THE WIND – CHRISTOPHER CROSS LW#1: CALL ME - BLONDIE I’ll comment on the above three songs a little later on.
40: STARTING OVER AGAIN – DOLLY PARTON (debut) - This song was kind of depressing. Nevertheless, I kinda liked it. 39: LET’S GET SERIOUS – JERMAINE JACKSON (debut) - Meh, it was OK, but I prefer his mid-80s hits. 38: WONDERING WHERE THE LIONS ARE (debut) - BRUCE COCKBURN - Pretty good song. Has sort of a country/folk flavor. 37: LET ME BE THE CLOCK – SMOKEY ROBINSON (debut) - This was OK, but he’s had a few better songs. 36: CRAZY LITTLE THING CALLED LOVE - QUEEN (27) - Quite overplayed, like several of their songs. I’m not a big fan of the song, but I will say that I like it better than their other 1980 song, which is THE most overplayed song by Queen. 35: THE SEDUCTION – THE JAMES LAST BAND (40) - This was an instrumental, so I’ll bet I know what Bry’s opinion of this song is. As for me, I liked it. Kinda sounds like it could have been done by Dave Koz. 34: TRAIN IN VAIN (STAND BY ME) – THE CLASH (38) - I’m not a huge fan of the Clash, but this one is pretty good. 33: STEAL AWAY – ROBBIE DUPREE (debut) - Awesome song, probably my favorite of his two big hits. Sounds very much like “What A Fool Believes” by the Doobie Brothers. In fact, on the following week’s show, on which one of the Archive songs was “What A Fool Believes”, Casey mentions the similarity between the two songs. 32: FIRE IN THE MORNING – MELISSA MANCHESTER (32) - I remember hearing this song a lot when I had my wisdom teeth pulled, back in 1992. The Lite Rock station I listened to seemed to play the same handful of songs for about a week, and this song happened to be one of those songs that same weekend (in fact, if my memory serves me correctly, this song was played on the radio during the process). Anyway, I like the song a lot, like many of her other songs. ARCHIVES: DO YA THINK I’M SEXY – ROD STEWART - This song was OK, but quite overplayed, and I was a little irked that it beat out the aforementioned “What A Fool Believes” for #1 song of 1979. 31: AND THE BEAT GOES ON – THE WHISPERS (28) - Welcome to Miami! This one’s OK, but I prefer “Rock Steady”. 30: OFF THE WALL – MICHAEL JACKSON (16) - This one was pretty good, but he’s had many better hits. 29: THE ROSE – BETTE MIDLER (39) - The biggest move of the week. This song would go on to hit #3 in June (and managed to spend a week at #1 on the R&R chart). 28: I PLEDGE MY LOVE – PEACHES AND HERB (19) - This song was OK, but not quite as good as “Reunited”. 27: HEART HOTELS – DAN FOGELBERG (33) - Great song - one of Dan’s more obscure songs. 26: DO RIGHT – PAUL DAVIS (31) - Good song, but I prefer others by him. 25: TOO HOT – KOOL & THE GANG (14) - Awesome song, definitely one of their best (and my the #1 song of 1980, according to my personal Top 30 chart). 24: FUNKY TOWN – LIPPS, INC. (29) - No. Just no. Give me Pseudo-Echo’s rock version of it any day! This week, they did sort of a weird edit of this song. LDD: BABE - STYX - I liked this song. The LDD that went along with it was good, too, unlike the cringe-inducing one on a 1981 show that they played earlier this year. 23: ANY WAY YOU WANT IT - JOURNEY (23) - I’m surprised that this is all the higher this song got, given that it still gets quite a lot of airplay nowadays. 22: BRASS IN POCKET – THE PRETENDERS (25) - As I said last week, I like most of the Pretenders’ songs. This one included. ARCHIVES: I WILL SURVIVE – GLORIA GAYNOR - Good song - a 70s mix show essential, especially one with a disco theme. 21: STOMP – THE BROTHERS JOHNSON (24) - No. Just no. 20: THINK ABOUT ME – FLEETWOOD MAC (20) - Nothing special. Sounds like several other FM songs with Christine McVie singing lead. 19: BREAK DOWN DEAD AHEAD – BOZ SCAGGS (26) - Good song, one of his best. Sounds a little like “Lido Shuffle”, which is another one of his best songs. Ouch @ him turning down the offer of having “Lowdown” on the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack and going with “Looking For Mr. Goodbar” instead. He lost a million dollars on that deal! 18: CARS – GARY NUMAN (22) - Great song - an 80s mix show essential. 17: I CAN’T HELP IT – ANDY GIBB & OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN (21) - I heard this song on WEFM on the way to work the other day. It’s OK, but both of them have had many better songs. 16: WORKING MY WAY BACK TO YOU / FORGIVE ME GIRL – THE SPINNERS (11) - Great song that more than did justice to the original, since they didn’t sound like they were constipated when singing this song, and, to boot, they insert a new song as a bridge. 15: HURT SO BAD – LINDA RONSTADT (18) - Good remake of the classic by Little Anthony & The Imperials. Casey played drop pieces of both that song and the one by the Lettermen. I liked this version best, although Linda has had many better songs. 14: BIGGEST PART OF ME – AMBROSIA (17) - Awesome song! Definitely one of the best on the chart this week, and their best song ever (although “How Much I Feel” would be a close second). This song didn’t quite top the Billboard Hot 100, but it did spend a month at the top on R&R. EXTRA: BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY – THE FOUR SEASONS - This was one of those “filler extras”, in which Casey would mention the top three songs from a random artist and then play the biggest one. However, Casey made a mistake when reading the three biggest songs. The third biggest Frankie Valli song (with or without the Four Seasons) was actually “December, 1963", not “Grease” as Casey mentioned. 13: PILOT OF THE AIRWAVES – CHARLIE DORE (15) - This song was pretty good. 12: SPECIAL LADY – RAY, GOODMAN & BROWN (5) - I’ve recently come to like this song. Your typical early-80s slow jam. ARCHIVES: TRAGEDY – THE BEE GEES - Great song, one of their best! 11: DON’T FALL IN LOVE WITH A DREAMER (13) - KENNY ROGERS W/ KIM CARNES- Great song, another one of my favorites on the charts (and one of my favorites by both artists) 10: HOLD ON TO MY LOVE – JIMMY RUFFIN - Great song! Very energetic sounding. 9: SEXY EYES – DR. HOOK - Pretty good song, but it still doesn’t hold a candle to “Better Love Next Time”. 8: I CAN’T TELL YOU WHY – THE EAGLES (8) - Good song, but they’ve had many better. LMAO @ the story about Joe Walsh’s hotel room rampage! 7: YOU MAY BE RIGHT – BILLY JOEL (9) - Crash, tinkle tinkle! This song was a great one - my second favorite of the Top Ten songs from “Glass Houses”, behind “Don’t Ask Me Why”. 6: FIRE LAKE – BOB SEGER (7) - Great song! My favorite single from “Against The Wind” (and the other two were great, too.) LDD: THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME – GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS - Very sweet dedication. As for the song, it’s pretty good, but they’ve had a few better. 5: ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL – PINK FLOYD - (3) - Good song, but quite overplayed. Too bad AT40 never played the part at the end (“Wrong, do it again!” “If you don’t eat your meat, you can’t have any pudding!”, etc.) 4: WITH YOU I’M BORN AGAIN – BILLY PRESTON & SYREETA (4) - I love this song! It has sort of a hypnotic effect. 3: LOST IN LOVE – AIR SUPPLY (6) - This was the song that started it all off for them! And it was a great start, as it’s one of my all-time favorites from the band. 2: RIDE LIKE THE WIND – CHRISTOPHER CROSS (2) - Great song. This song made a valiant effort to hit #1, being stuck in the runner-up position for four weeks, but the #1 song was just too strong for him. 1: CALL ME - BLONDIE - Another great song! This is the one that wouldn’t let poor Christopher Cross in. It spent six consecutive weeks at #1 and even became the number one song of 1980.
Predictions for next week: I have a feeling that they'll do 1982 next week, but 1988 isn't out of the question either (since they seem to be about a week behind, they just might do the May 7 one next week, since that's a former Flashback show). We'll have to wait and see.
