This was a repeat from two years back, before I discovered this show. That means I have this show, which will come in handy if my connection screws up.
A whole ton of droppers this week. Six of them, to be exact. You sure don’t see that on the charts nowadays (unless a lot of songs go recurrent simultaneously):
Charlie Sexton - Beats So Lonely (39) - This song was OK, but nothing I’d go out of my way to hear.
Whitney Houston - How Will I Know (35) - Meh, kinda overplayed, so no big loss.
Robert Tepper - No Easy Way Out (34) - Pretty good song. I have it on several other shows.
Opus - Live Is Life (33) - Not a big fan of it. I can see why it peaked so low.
Starship - Sara (27) - Like the Whitney song, quite overplayed, so no big loss.
ELO - Calling America (25) - Good song, one of my favorites by them. Shame to see it drop off
40: MOVE AWAY - CULTURE CLUB (debut) - I like this song. Casey mentioned that this was their first hit in over a year; however, their comeback was less than stellar, as this was their only song from the album “From Luxury To Heartache” and even it didn’t hit the Top Ten. I felt it was somewhat underrated.
39: BE GOOD TO YOURSELF - JOURNEY (debut) - This song was pretty good, but it was my least favorite release from “Raised On Radio”.
38: A LITTLE BIT OF LOVE (IS ALL IT TAKES) (38) - NEW EDITION - Pretty good song, but I preferred their two 1985 hits.
37: NEVER AS GOOD AS THE FIRST TIME (debut) - SADE - Meh, not really one of my favorite songs by Sade. I preferred “Smooth Operator” and “Paradise”.
36: ROUGH BOY - ZZ TOP (debut) - Love this song! Possibly my favorite song from the band, who’s known for their upbeat songs, but this was a ballad.
35: LIVE TO TELL - MADONNA (debut) - Good song, one of her better #1s.
34: THIS COULD BE THE NIGHT - LOVERBOY (21) - Good song, definitely one of my favorite songs by the band. So odd that they’ve only had two Top Ten hits, as some of their low charters get so much airplay that one would assume that they were former Top Ten hits.
33: IS IT LOVE - MR. MISTER (40) - Pretty good song, but I prefer “Broken Wings” and “Something Real”
32: NIKITA - ELTON JOHN (17) - Good song, but he has had many better songs.
31: ON MY OWN (debut) - PATTI LaBELLE & MICHAEL McDONALD - I like this song a lot, such was not the case back when it was on the chart, at which time I hated it with a passion.
Optional Extra: DANGER ZONE - KENNY LOGGINS - OK song, but one of my least favorite of his movie songs.
30: FOR AMERICA - JACKSON BROWNE (31) - Good song, but I prefer many other songs by him, such as “Here Come Those Tears Again” and “That Girl Could Sing”, to mention just a few.
29: ALL I NEED IS A MIRACLE - MIKE & THE MECHANICS (37) - Good song, but I preferred their next hit “Taken In”.
LDD: THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR - DIONNE & FRIENDS - Good song. Was this EVER a popular LDD song!
28: I CAN'T WAIT - NU SHOOZ (36) - No. Just no.
27: SOMETHING ABOUT YOU - LEVEL 42 (32) - I like this song. It sure got a lot of mileage for a song that only got as high as #7 (it was even weirder on R&R, where it spent one more week on and peaked at #9).
26: SATURDAY LOVE - CHERRELLE WITH ALEXANDER O'NEAL (28) - Pretty good song. Speaking of the R&R chart, this song never even charted there.
25: I DO WHAT I DO (THEME FROM "9 1/2 WEEKS") (30) - JOHN TAYLOR - Another pretty good song. Sure has a catchy chorus.
24: OVERJOYED - STEVIE WONDER (24) - Great song, one of his best. Sort or reminds me of “Send One Your Love”.
23: THESE DREAMS - HEART (13) - Good song. Glad it became their first #1.
22: GREATEST LOVE OF ALL - WHITNEY HOUSTON (29) - Great song, though I prefer the version with the synthesized piano (they played the regular piano version this week)
Optional Extra: TUFF ENUFF - FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS - Although I’m not much for 80s southern rock, this one’s pretty good.
21: SO FAR AWAY - DIRE STRAITS (22) - Good song, one of their best.
20: IF YOU LEAVE - ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK (26) - Easily my least favorite song by them (due to the gross overplay)
19: SECRET LOVERS (11) - ATLANTIC STARR - Great song. When I first gave the lyrics my undivided attention, it sort of gave me the creeps. Imagine having to sneak around like that!
LDD: ANGEL - MADONNA
18: BAD BOY - MIAMI SOUND MACHINE (23) - Good song - one of their upbeat songs that I really like (the others being “Betcha Say That” and “Live For Loving You”)
17: I THINK IT'S LOVE - JERMAINE JACKSON (18) - Great song, definitely one of my favorites by Jermaine (others include “Dynamite” and “Do What You Do”)
16: I CAN'T WAIT - STEVIE NICKS - (16) Great song - much better than the song back at #28. I like many of her solo hits.
15: AMERICAN STORM - BOB SEGER & THE SILVER BULLET BAND (20) - Awesome song! Sounds a lot like the song by him that we heard last week (“Even Now”). Also reminds me a little of “Born To Run” by Bruce Springsteen.
14: TAKE ME HOME - PHIL COLLINS (19) - Good song, like every other release from “No Jacket Required” (although “Sussudio” was quite overplayed). Many thought he was done releasing tracks from “Jacket” when he had that big #1 hit with Marilyn Martin, but he surprised us with one last track.
13: YOUR LOVE - THE OUTFIELD (15) - Good song, but I preferred their next release “All The Love In The World”.
12: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY (14) - JANET JACKSON - meh, not my favorite song by her. I preferred her slower material.
Optional Extra: PRETTY IN PINK - PSYCHEDELIC FURS - Wow, what an odd choice for an optional extra, as it never hit the Top 40 and I don’t think it gets any airplay today. Anyway, this was the first time I ever heard the song and it’s pretty good, like their other two songs that I know.
11: R.O.C.K. IN THE U.S.A. - JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP (4) - Cool song, a good salute to 60s rock music.10: TENDER LOVE - FORCE M.D.'S (10) - Great song! Frankie J pretty much remade the song a few years back (but the “original” was much better!) I like the part at the end, where the high piano sounds like a music box.
9: WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE - VAN HALEN (12) - Good song, the one that ushered in the Van Hagar era. I like this, as well as their next two hits from the 90210 album.
8: HARLEM SHUFFLE - THE ROLLING STONES (9) - Meh, this song was OK, but far from being their best. I believe it just missed making AT40's Top 100 of 1986.
7: LET'S GO ALL THE WAY - SLY FOX (7) - Cool song. Too bad it was their only Top 40 hit (and was it me, or did they edit it down kinda weird near the end?)
6: WHAT YOU NEED - INXS (5) - Cool song - much better than what turned out to be their biggest hit.
5/LDD: WEST END GIRLS - PET SHOP BOYS (8) - Good song, but I prefer a few other songs by them (including their next hit “Opportunities”)
4: ROCK ME AMADEUS - FALCO (1) - This song can be good or annoying - depends on which version it is. For instance, this week, they played the one with the timeline, which I don’t like as much as the other version (the one that begins with “Ooh, Rock Me Amadeus”).
3: ADDICTED TO LOVE - ROBERT PALMER (6) - Meh, this song is OK, but one of the most overplayed songs of the 1980s and is in a close race with “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood for the most overplayed song of 1986. (I do prefer this one, unsurprisingly).
Optional Extra: YOUR WILDEST DREAMS - THE MOODY BLUES - Great song, definitely one of their best.
2: MANIC MONDAY - THE BANGLES (3) - Good song, one of my favorites by them.
1: KISS - PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION (2) - But this is one of my LEAST favorite songs by Prince. Interesting fact: this is only the second time that a solo songwriter had the top two songs of the week. The last time it happened was back in October, 1983, when two Jim Steinman songs (“Total Eclipse Of The Heart” by Bonnie Tyler and “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” by Air Supply), were at #1 and #2, respectively.
A note to mmb. "No. Just no" generally for a song that either literally makes you cringe when you hear it or you just plain can't bring yourself to listen to it and turn down the volume. Of course, you can use it as often as you'd like, but just thought I'd mention it, since Bry and I tend to use that phrase very sparingly
