All:
Well, my "Casey Kasem's American Top 40: The 80s" year-end program suggestion of 1989 was just that: a suggestion. I would think that Premiere has rights to ALL of the AT40 shows from the original 1970-1995, so theorhetically, I think we could hear a 1989 show in there (with Ed McMann's disclaimer that said program's host was Shadoe Stevens (or some substitute host if a non-Casey show from 1970-1988 airs)). Hey, at least we wouldn't have to hear Milli Vanilli if 1989 were disqualified; they had three songs in the Top 100 year-end show.
As far as the optional extras that I would choose if they were to pick 1989, I'd go with the songs that were peaking at year-end, including "Don't Know Much" by Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville, "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel, and "Just Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins.
For the corresponding 1970 year-end program, I'd go with songs that just missed the Top 80, plus "Someday We'll Be Together" by Diana Ross & the Supremes; even though it had peaked the final week of December 1969, it was still in the Top 40 well into February 1970. And, "I Think I Love You" by the Partridge Family, a famous example of a massively popular song failing to make a year-end countdown — either 1970 or 1971 — because of its late-November 1970 chart peak.

Brian -- certainly fair to make the suggestion...but as has been said before...the show is called "CASEY KASEM'S American Top 40: The 80s," not merely "American Top 40: The 80s." I think we'd stand a better chance of hearing the Shadoe shows on XM, but sadly I think the only way we're going to ever hear those again is in our own collections. Which is too bad, as Shadoe did a really good job as host of the show.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'd hate to see them disregard the "Casey Kasem" part of the title.
The 1987 year-end show paired with 1970 still might be a great comparison, though (since it was the last year-end show with Casey at the helm).

Good god, don't remind me of "Blame It On the Rain." That song was awful. :-P

"Blame It On The Rain" just barely made it. Had it retained its bullet on the December 3 chart, it would have been deferred over to 1990.
Actually, I rather liked that song. Much better than their first two songs.

Pete, My first choice would probably be the Top 100 of 1974. From there it would be 1976 and 1975. All 3 have special memories for me.

Pete;
Thank you for your great idea of this poll question.
Now, it seems that 1970 has obtained the most votes for the 70s Year-End show, while 1974, 1975 and 1979 come in the second.
Let's see what will be the Premier's selection in two months.

I'll take Milli Vanilli over ANY song currently on CHR right now.
Anyhow, I vote for 1970, in which many songs that otherwise would never have been featured on AT40 show up.

A mere suggestion.......all of you who want to hear the 1970 year end should write Lorre Crimi at lcrimi@premiereradio.com Don't say I prompted you to but just mention you want to hear it and the why. I have been pushing for this one myself. Shannon

It appears that correspondence has been sent to 70s stations with news of the year-end show. For the weekend of December 27 & 28, stations will be airing the Top 40 of 1971.

Pete, Any info on the 80's year-end countdown and is At40: The 70s planning to air the Xmas Special from 1971? There was no mention about a Christmas program but I suppose it's possible it may appear the weekend of December 20/21. I know that Shannon has searched high and low for some Christmas tracks in an effort to upgrade audio quality for both (1971 and 1973) special shows. If given a choice, it would be difficult for me to identify which one I'd like to hear on terrestrial stations. Hearing either one would be a real treat. But I'm unaware if that'll happen. Regarding your question about the 80s year-end show, as far as I know, it will air only one weekend, the same weekend as the Top 40 for 1971. That means it'll likely be a Top 50 program. Additional information will no doubt be forthcoming soon.
