I love AT40, grew up with it starting in 78 and all through the 80s. I used to record the shows on cassette off the radio when I was a kid. But of course cassettes become unlistenable after a while, and I'd like to start a collection. I understand you guys trade shows back and forth but I have nothing to trade. Could you guys give me tips on how to get started?

I started by recording shows off XM. Then after a while, I bought a few shows off eBay, and that helped me build up a collection. Those are probably your best ways to get started.

I've tried the e-bay route as well - but sure enough, EVERY SINGLE TIME I had a bid, I always was outbid and never won any. People are willing to pay a lot for these things, aren't they?
I do have one show - a 1988 Shadoe show I got from a record show years ago, for $10. Too bad I haven't seen any more at record shows since.

The main thing I've learned about Ebay puchasing is that every second counts. Try to be at your computer at the very end because there is always someone who waits till the last few seconds before upsetting your bid with a higher one. That happened to me more times than once and, although, your conscience may (or may not) bother you, you may find that you have to do the same thing.

The best thing, at least my case, it is recording the regular shows SXM or Premiere Radio (terrestrial or online) air every weekend. But recording yourself the shows and then wait for the opportunity of sharing with someone who missed a show and have another one you missed in return. That is the old and conventional way that makes your collection more interesting and, the best of all, makes you meet a lot of new friends who share the same hobby.

I record every single show off a stream and edit and catalog it. I have hundreds of shows. That is the best way besides ebay. I use Replay AV 8 for recording

Could you guys give me tips on how to get started? I started about 2 years ago recording off WQSR. I use Replay A/V. Good software. It allows you to set a timer and records automatically. With recording every week and trades I have about 100+ shows now (all 80s). I recommend getting yourself software that records the shows and PM'ing people here who might want to trade. Also you can go to www.4shared.com and search AT40. I have a bunch of shows uploaded there. P.S. theblackswan, awesome site. Thanks so much for the link!

Glad this thread I started about 3 years ago is still going, for future collectors everywhere. Thanks to the tips in this thread, I now have probably 50 shows now.

Wasn't there a BlackSwan post in here, from when he blasted his post all over?

I did download some episodes in recent days, and I must say, it is a thrill to enjoy being a teenager again. I even downloaded a broadcast that I had to wait nearly a quarter of a century to finally hear because my radio station apparently skipped the 6/13/1987 episode on 6/20/1987 resulting in synchronizing with most of the rest of the world. And I think the reason for the broadcasts being behind where I live (I listened to AT40 on CHOZ-FM in St. John's, Newfoundland at that time) might have been due to a major ice storm in April 1984 that caused a widespread blackout and knocked out power everywhere including radio stations (though VOCM remained on the air for some reason), thus resulting in a one-week delay for AT40 broadcasts, and the April 14, 1984 broadcast didn't air until April 21, 1984 (Easter weekend). Sent you a PM, 80sfreak.

I did record the show off the radio back in the 1970's.I did a hack job of doing so.I edit the tunes I did not like at the time.Today hearing the same show from the PreRad collection brings me back memories and wonder why I edit the tunes out. They were not bad after all.I've been on the bandwagon off recording PreRads reairing of AT40's probably about 3 plus years now.I got 4 computers on a router recording webstreaming all the time the show airs online.I use Total Recorder to record them.I did had XM but I drop them when the merge fell into place and also what they did with the editing of the shows.Plus a local station runs the 1980's 3 hour show on sunday morning .which comes in loud and clear signal.

After just checking Shannon Lynn's AT40 descriptions from late 1983, it turns out that there was a delay even before the ice storm hit my Newfoundland hometown. It turns out that the 4/7/1984 episode did not air on OZ-FM whatsoever on 4/14/1984, and the 4/14/1984 broadcast aired as usual the following Saturday.
I now know the one-week delay on OZ-FM occurred even before 1984 and I can confirm that I listened to the 12/3/1983 broadcast on 12/10/1983. I know this because I definitely remember hearing Kim Carnes' Invisible Hands on AT40 on 12/10/1983 on OZ-FM, and it certainly fell off the top 40 on the official 12/10/1983 broadcast which aired on OZ-FM on 12/17/1983.

Blackswan has been banned from this group. Why was he banned? I saw one of his posts, and his user title reads "Guest". I always assumed he would have deleted his account. Maybe he was advertising his site all over the forums or something? If so, I can see why he was banned. If you're going to advertise, that's why there is a thing called a signature.
