Should Premiere air all the At40 episodes?

this past weekend I got to hear my first At40 rerun since I started listening to the old episodes on the radio last year with the 07/17/76 episode.

So I'm wondering will Premiere all the episodes in chronological order?

That is will the Premiere air all the episodes from the first episode on 07/11/70 to the last Casey episode from the show's original run on 08/06/88 on Monday thru Friday?

That's wishful thinking,but don't bet on it-Premiere is obviously satisfied with the way things are going.

I'd like to hear all of the AT40's at some point, at least all of those from the original Casey Kasem era.

I think the chances of this ever happening are less than 1% on terrestrial radio, and less than 5% on satellite radio/internet radio. There are not many people (includng myself) who would want to hear AT40 run chronologically Monday-Friday, and then another 4-10 shows depending on how many you listen to/record on the weekend. That would require a listening public to dedicate 3 or 4 hours to radio listening for a specific program every weekday. Also, you would have to convince some radio outlet to give up 3-4 hours of their weekday schedule, the advertising revenue that comes with some of that time, and the loss of a DJ to do this...and that's not to mention many of those stations now already have current live national shows that they do air that they probably aren't wanting to give up to run old countdowns that over the next few days, are going to have the same songs on it, int he same 4 hour block, and all from the same year while programs like John Tesh and Delilah at least in theory have more of a variety to choose from. Weekend timeslots are where these programs are now, and in all honesty, where they belong in my opinion.

I don't know if XM's experience would fit in here but they did air American Top 40 shows once or twice every day on XM 8 for 3 months Dec 2002-Feb 2003. Granted, some were repeats, but even so, by the end of Feb 2003, a majority of listeners were tired of AT40 and they were the ones who provided the ammunition needed by then 80s PD, Bruce Kelly, to "justify" taking American Top 40 off, although it was later revealed that XM only had the rights to AT40 for those 3 months as part of their takeover of the Flashback series, after Premiere ended it in late 2002.

XM apparently learned its lesson and, with the exception of a two day marathon at the beginning and after a short time of having two different shows on each channel each week, both XM 7 and XM 8 settled on the idea of one AT40 show played twice a week on each channel. From what I have heard on the various discussion boards, fans are much happier with this than what happened in 2002-2003.

In March 2008, there was some talk of broadcasting another AT40 marathon on XM 2 and the marathon was actually scheduled on the program list for a short time. After a few days, the marathon was taken off the schedule and I emailed John Clay, 70s PD to ask why. He said, then, that they were working on getting the marathon rescheduled but I have heard nothing else about it since then.

Do all of the AT40 shows exist? I mean I know Walt Bailey has a 'copy' of every show but if you goto Shannons site, theres still quite a few 'cue' sheets missing, which I think means either those shows have not been one of the following: a. not found. b. not remastered. c. cue sheets not found & subsequently not yet created.

From what I understand, those listed on Shannon's site are the ones that have been remastered only.

Two points of clarification (since I beat Pete to the answer LOL). First, EVERY AT40 show exists either on master tape and/or an excellent vinyl source. The only missing segment of any AT40 is Hour 3 of the second show. Having witnessed and worked with some of the boxes of master tapes, they are in excellent shape. This is how we finally got a clean hour from the Feb 1971 date that was so bad. I 'reconstructed' a 3rd Hour for the second show a few years back but it really needs to be redone. The remastering technique finally settled on in the past year raised the bar to new highs. If anyone is interested, I can email them a spreadsheet to see what is in what condition/state.

Secondly, the list of cue sheets on Charis Music Group have absolutely nothing to do with what has or has not been remastered. Tons of shows have been remastered where we don't have cue sheets and on the flipside, tons of cue sheets are listed for shows that have not been remastered.

Lastly, weighing in on the "should Premiere air all of the AT40 episodes," it's just not practical but I would like to see Premiere step out of their comfort zone and air a few guest hosts. And, dare I say it, break out the Casey's Top 40! I've been restoring those for them as well but we're having some trouble locating some special dates.

If they ever decide to re-air Casey's Top 40, you can take that as a sign you will never hear Shadoe shows again. For people who don't know that story, and have been sold a bill of goods by AMFM/Premiere for 10 years now, THAT would probably confuse people. Plus you would have the whole deal of when AT40's music began to change some due to the Hot 100 and all that.

Agree with pzimm7700. DJs will have to cut time in the usual schedule of a day at the radio station, not to mention that it will take a very long time before each show is played. It will not only become redundant, but possibly after have it for two or three years, some stations may drop the shows for different programming or whatever.

To answer the original question ... in a word, no.

I don't think "AT40" ... or any other syndicated radio program, for that matter ... is like a TV marathon, where episodes from a single series are aired back-to-back-to-back ... well, you get the idea. I can see airing maybe six or seven in a row on a holiday weekend (when radio stations are typically put on automation and the staff given time off), and then maybe waiting until the next holiday a year later to do so. Or if there were some promotion or observation of a milestone (such as the death of someone critical to the show), maybe.

But like a marathon or even daily reruns of an old show on television? No, no, no.
