On this week's '70's show (4/16/77) the #1 song was "Don't Give Up On Us" by David Soul. Looking ahead one week in one of my Billboard reference books, I notice that the song displacing that at #1 was "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston. Both of those songs, as you can see, begin with the same word, "Don't". If I may throw this topic out to all of you, can anybody else come up with an example of back-to-back #1 songs that both begin with the same word. I could easily look through my reference books for other examples, but I'd rather give you all a chance to chime in.

You might think that successive 'The' songs would be more common, but in the '70s and '80s I can only find two occurrences: June of 1970, "The Long and Winding Road" followed by "The Love You Save", and May 1974, "The Locomotion" followed by "The Streak".

How about CT 40 from 1995 since AT 40 was on hiatus? Two consecutive titles beginning with the same word, and two titles that are fairly synonymous:
I Know - Dionne Farris
I Believe - Blessid Union of Souls

There were 5 straight songs with that word in the title 8/20/88: 38: DON'T BE CRUEL - BOBBY BROWN 37: DON'T BE CRUEL - CHEAP TRICK 36: I DON'T WANT TO BE A HERO - JOHNNY HATES JAZZ 35: DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY - BOBBY McFERRIN 34: PLEASE DON'T GO GIRL - NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Back in 1958, on the Music Vendor chart, It's All In the Game (Tommy Edwards) was followed into the number one position by It's Only Make Believe (Conway Twitty). Tom Dooley came between those two #1's in Billboard.
In Jan. 1962, The Twist (Chubby Checker) followed The Lion Sleep Tonight (The Tokens, from Dec. 1961,into the #1 position. One other interesting back to back #1's from 1962 were Shelia (Tommy Roe) which was followed by Sherry (4 Seasons)--both starting with the same three letters (S-H-E)--WOW!

But it was listed solely as "TSOP" in "Billboard" and as "TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)" on the label of the 45, which I was playing the heck out of 45 years ago this week.
