Peaceful Easy Feeling by The Eagles #22 Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet #8 1999 by Prince #12 Another early Eagles' song that has long enjoyed iconic status in spite of only reaching #12 in the summer of '72 is "Take It Easy".

As much as it was played back in the day, it's hard to believe Steve Perry's "Foolish Heart" only got to #18.

Here are a few examples I thought of:
--Big Yellow Taxi-Joni Mitchell (only peaked in the 60s in its first chart run in 1970--a cover version did reach the top 30 that summer, and alive version in 1975 made the top 30 as well, though) --Bloody Well Right-Supertramp (stalled at 35 in 1975) --Cheeseburger in Paradise-Jimmy Buffett (only reached 32 in 1978) --Roxanne-The Police (I recall being disappointed in the spring of 1979 when it stalled at 32) --I Need a Lover-John Cougar (barely reached the top 30) --It's Raining Men-Weather Girls (only reached the top 50 in 1983) --Forever-Kenny Loggins (lots of AC airplay in the mid-'80s but barely scratched the top 40 in July 1985)

There are a lot of classic early MTV favorites that missed the Top 40: I Melt With You by Modern English, Mexican Radio by Wall Of Voodoo, New Years' Day by U2, The Metro by Berlin, Goodbye To You by Scandal, Once In A Lifetime by Talking Heads, and both Words and Destination Unknown by Missing Persons.

Barry Scott played "Cheeseburger In Paradise" on last weekend's edition of "The Lost 45's".

Probably my favorite lowest charting song from the 1960's is But It's Alright by J.J Jackson--which reached #22 in 1966 and then charted a second time in 1969 getting to #45. The song spent a total of 23 weeks on the Billboard charts during it's two chart runs. The song is played fairly regularly on the 60's on 6 SiriusXM.
Another favorite low charter is Donnie Iris & Ah Leah; reaching #29 in 1981.

Couldn't agree more with both of those, Joe.

In Your Eyes Old Time Rock & Roll Seems like at least a few Peter Gabriel songs would fit in this thread.

Great list. Billy Idol's Dancing With Myself was another early MTV classic which missed the top 40. Hot 100, even.

Another "Paradise" song from 1978 that charted low was Meat Loaf's "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" which only peaked at #39 in September 1978.

Sorry! Can you let me off with a warning this time? OK, but make sure it doesn't happen again. Thank you for correcting--I'll sleep better now...

R.E.M. It's the End of the World As We Know It only hit 69.
Also Centerfield #44 is the only song I still hear from that album even though the other 2 hits made the top 20.
