As a baby boomer, other than the Beatles, I think this special lady meant more to me with her music from the time I was 12 until my 30's. Seeing her with her group, the Supremes, on Ed Sullivan brings back fond memories! The accomplishments as lead singer of the Supremes are just phenomenal. Twelve number 1 records from August 1964 to December 1969--more than any other American group. If "Nothing But Heartaches," had reached one position higher than its peak of #11, the Supremes would have had 15 consecutive Top 10 records, which even the Beatles didn't accomplish. This should be a record by group? Also 5 number 1's in a row in less than one year from August 1964 to June 1965. I also believe this is undefeated?
Ms. Ross also did quite well as a solo artist, with 5 number 1's from 1970 to 1980. She had duets with Marvin Gaye and her biggest accomplishment was "Endless Love with Lionel Richie, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for 9 weeks.
Diana Ross still looks great today, and I sure have always loved her music. I have had her music on albums, 8 tracks (showing my age), cassettes, and CDs.
Please feel free to add any comments, or if I cited any misinformation, please feel free to correct me.
Thanks for reading, and HAPPY 75th BIRTHDAY TO THE FABULOUS DIANA ROSS!

So did the Bee Gees. Then Whitney Houston broke their record with seven straight #1's. Elvis established the mark for male artists, with five. Michael Jackson tied it -- with one album.

Thanks Doofus! Was I right about the American group with most #1s? And just thought of another one--is she the only female to hit #1 as a solo artist, duo, and group? Doofus you are a walking encyclopedia of music--I am just overwhelmed at your knowledge to be so young and love this music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Most impressed!!! Maybe I will have to pay honor to you on your birthday!

Maybe I will have to pay honor to you on your birthday! Those are very kind words. Truth be told, a lot of folks on this board really have their stuff together. Yes, the Supremes had more #1's than any other American group. Next in line are the Eagles, KC & the Sunshine Band, and Boyz II Men, each with five. And yes, Diana is still the only female to hit #1 in all of those configurations. When I was a kid, we had a four-album vinyl box set of 64 great Motown hits from 1964 to 1971, and that's how I first got to know all of those artists. ( www.45worlds.com/vinyl/album/nc353196us ) Then, getting my first Joel Whitburn book at 16 broke things wide open. I used to hang out with my in-laws a lot, and they would listen to nothing but oldies. (The "oldies" part of that is still true.) On satellite radio, 60s on 6, The Bridge (70s soft rock), and Siriusly Sinatra are my go-to channels. Now I'm heavily into the charts of the 60s, and since the great drummer Hal Blaine passed away a couple of weeks ago, I started compiling a list of the biggest hit records he played on. Fun stuff!

My favorite Diana Ross songs, in terms of solo singles:
"Upside Down" "Muscles" "No One Gets the Prize" "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" "Love Hangover" "Missing You"
I also realize that part of "Love Hangover" was also sampled on Monica's 1998 song "The First Night". "I'm Coming Out" is another good one, but I wonder if it had a tie-in to people in a certain culture? (think GLAAD).
I don't think "No One Gets the Prize" ever made it to AT40, though I heard that it was written by Ashford & Simpson and it is one of the songwriting team's best compositions, in my opinion.
