David White, co-founder of Danny & The Juniors passed away March 17 at the age of 79. No cause of death was given, though he had been hospitalized for the past month. Along with his singing skills, David was a prolific songwriter as well. He co-wrote "At The Hop", the chart-topper for Danny & The Juniors. Their follow-up Top 20 hit "Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay" was David's composition. He would team with John Madara, the band's producer to write a number of notable hits during the 60s. A short list would include Chubby Checker's "The Fly", Len Barry's "1-2-3" (with Len), and the Secrets' Top 20 hit "The Boy Next Door". In 1965, David would reach the Top 40 one last time, teaming with John Madera and DJ Ray Gilmore. As the Spokesmen, they reached #36 with "Dawn Of Correction". It was their answer song to Barry McGuire's "Eve Of Destruction". In 1963 David White and John Madera composed what became an early women rights anthem. It seemed destined to become a second #1 hit for Lesley Gore, jumping 13-2 after six weeks in the Hot 100. Unfortunately it peaked at #2 for 3 weeks, stuck behind "I Want To Hold Your Hand".
