A couple of rock and roll deaths toward the end of 2018 that were missed... Honey (Anne) Lantree (1943 - 2018): Honey's uniqueness was that she was the drummer for the otherwise all male British Invasion group the Honeycombs. They would top the UK charts and peak at #5 on the Hot 100 with this thumper. She passed away December 23. Have I The Right? - HoneycombsObituary
Dean Ford (1946 - 2018) passed away the evening of December 31, 2018. His music career began as the lead singer of the Gaylords, a UK group. A name change in 1966 would lead the group to success on the UK charts. During his tenure as lead singer and frontman of this band, they would reach the UK Top 10 seven times. Success proved elusive in the US. Their first UK Top 10 "Lovin' Things" was successfully covered by the Grass Roots who had the US hit. Their second UK Top 10 "Baby Make It Soon" was a minor US chart hit for the Flying Machine (#87). They topped the UK charts with their third Top 10, a cover of the Beatles "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da". It was the fourth UK Top 10 that spelled success for the group. Dean co-wrote (as Thomas McAleese, his birth name) and sang lead on this #3 UK hit. It would reach #10 in the US, their only top 40 hit. Reflections Of My Life - MarmaladeObituary

Not rock’n’roll, but one of the biggest film musicians, Francis Lai, passed away on November 7 at the age of 86. His composition for Love Story had multiple cover versions on the charts (including Andy Williams, Henry Mancini and Lai’s own original version hitting the AT40); with the soundtrack album itself going a high as #2 on the Billboard 200. Of all of his over hundred film and TV scores, he has rarely drifted from emotional and romantic melodies he’s known for globally throughout his life. Obituary& some sample of his typical works thru the decades: From 1970: Snow Frolic (from Love Story) Francis Lai-Snow FrolicFrom 1969: Concerto for a Love’s Ending Francis Lai-Concerto for a Love’s EndingFrom 1988: Symphonie Du Hasard (From Chance or Coincidence) Francis Lai-Symphonie Du HasardThe other big name French musician that we lost in 2018 is Charles Aznavour who passed on October 1st at the age of 94. He’s most famous in the UK for a 1974 No. 1 single “She” (#44 on BB AC chart). But perhaps he’s better known in the US for his other composition “Yesterday, When I Was Young”) that its cover gave Roy Clark a Top 10 country ( and #19 Hot 100) in 1969. Meanwhile, here’s another country cover favorite of mine of that song by Glen Campbell: Yesterday, When I Was Young-Glen CampbellAnd a different treatment by Shirley Bassey recorded live in 1973 for German TV: Yesterday, When I Was Young-Shirley BasseyObituary
