I guess not because it would have been the first week of the year end countdown -
but I never noticed this before.
Same Old Lang Syne debuted at #37 and Sequel had been #38! That's a remarkable coincidence.
Every time I listen to Same Old Lang Syne on YouTube I think maybe this time I won't cry but then I read the comments - and here we go again. Is there another hit song that can match it in that respect?

If we're talking about songs next to each other, maybe it's worth noting that "Sequel" peaked at #23, one notch higher than "Taxi", the previous installment of that story did in 1972. Unfortunately Harry Chapin was killed in a highway crash less than a year later and so we never got Harry and Sue, Part 3.
Thematically, "Same Old Lang Syne" and "Sequel" do have the similarity of surprise reunions of old lovers. But the "coincidence" of them being back-to-back on 12/27/80 was likely never mentioned by Casey as the year end countdown started that week and so he never counted down that particular chart.

I don’t think Casey ever mentioned the amazing leap of “You’re So Vain” either. I think it was the biggest mover of the ‘70s. However, Larry Morgan did mention it in an optional and so did a guest host for Ryan Seacrest.

Yes, I can't be the only person who thought that Same Old Lang Syne had been inspired by Taxi, until the real story of Same Old Lang Syne became more widely known. Now, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Harry wrote Sequel once he heard about the recording of Same Old Lang Syne Otherwise it really is quite a coincidence that the two songs came out together, eight years after Taxi.

There's one big difference between the stories, at least to me: While Harry went searching for Sue in "Sequel", Dan was not 'stalking' his ex-girlfriend at the grocery store on Christmas Eve. Chance meeting.

I never heard "Sequel" until I listened to AT40 reruns. Listening to the 12/6/80 show a few weeks ago, I did notice the similarity with Fogelberg's song. As far as I know, Fogelberg's song has had a longer life on radio, which I think may be because of Fogelberg's warmer singing style, although Chapin's death not long after "Sequel"'s chart run may have also been a factor.

chrisic, I'm the opposite. I cry during both Taxi and Sequel, if I pay full attention to the songs. Dan's "Same Old" was horrifically overplayed in SW CT, and the greater NYC tri-state area in general, back in 1980-1981, so I'm okay if I never ever hear it or think of it again.
But Netherlands still gives me goosebumps. =o)

Then Reagan got shot and new songs finally came out instead of the Kool And The Gang Dolly Parton Eddie Rabbit marathon that seemed like it would never end. God I got sick of those songs. I was 24 then. Too young to be affected so emotionally. Also Christmas season was over for 90% of its chart run so there was less of a nostalgia thing going on. And - people were so upset about Lennon that maybe they didn't have much emotion left over for a new version of Taxi. Or two new versions of Taxi. But if you read the comments on YouTube the song really gets to a lot of people.

chrisic — AMEN to that "Kool & The Gang Dolly Parton Eddie Rabbit" marathon. I didn't breathe again till April 1981. LOL
I've always been a cryer. Hell, I cry at commercials. But, overplay ruins a song, and DF's SOLS was overplayed. I swear, Longer wasn't played as much where I lived as SOLS.
