Ariana Grande's, "thank u, next" debuted on American Top 40 at number 40 giving her four songs in the Top 40, as the lead artist, simultaneously.
I know in a world of "feature" artists, having four songs on AT 40 is not as rare as it once was. But as a lead artist, when was the last time any artist had four songs in the top 40?
In particular, did it ever happen on AT 40's first run? I can't remember it happening. I thought three was a big deal back in the day, but four would have been pretty astounding.

I don't think it happened between 1970 and 1988. Like you say, three was a big deal, such as the Bee Gees in early 1978. I don't think that four or more had happened since The Beatles in the spring of '64.

Speaking of the Bee Gees and 1978, during March and April the Brothers Gibb had 6 songs in the Top 40 they either wrote and/or performed on--How Deep Is Your Love, Stayin' Alive, Night Fever (all Bee Gees), Love Is Thicker Than Water (Andy Gibb), Emotion (Samantha Sang), and If I Can't Have You (Yvonne Elliman).

One of the most impressive feats, for sure. Grande, to give credit, is only two away just with her songs. She is credited as a songwriter on all four current top 40 hits.

My Baby Loves Lovin' by White Plains,United We Stand by The Brotherhood of Man and Gimme Dat Ding by the Pipkins. And for three weeks in a row in November of 1980, Diana Ross had three songs in the Top 40 at the same time. Her charttopper "Upside Down" was on its way down, "I'm Coming Out" was peaking in the Top 10, and "It's My Turn" was climbing. I don't think any other artist, not even Michael Jackson, achieved that feat in the '80's.

Melanie had 3 songs in the Top 40 during Feb/Mar 1972 with Brand New Key (recent #1 descending down the chart), Ring The Living Bell (follow up moving into the Top 40), and The Nickel Song (a song she recorded for another company that made the Top 40 at the same time as the other two). Casey talked about this on a few programs and Pete pointed this out in his book (the 1970's version).

By the way, Elvis had three simultaneous Top 40 hits in late 1956 (Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel & Love Me Tender) Herman's Hermits did the same in 1965 (Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter, Silhouettes, Can't You Hear My Heartbeat) and Sonny & Cher had 3 Top 40 hits (and Sonny had a solo hit) all in the Top 40 in September 1965 (Sonny's solo hit was Laugh At Me--and the other three Sonny & Cher songs were--I Got You Babe, Baby Don't Go, Just You). And of course, The Beatles had 7 songs in the Top 40 in the Spring of 1964 (something about the Top 5 one of those weeks, I think Casey mentioned it a time or two). It seems that in the 1960's record companies couldn't release singles fast enough.

Those seven Beatles songs in the 40 for several weeks in April 1964 were on four different labels: Capitol, of course, but also VeeJay, Tollie, and Swan. It's called 'cashing in'.

New Kids on the Block, on September 29, 1989 (and coincidentally the 1000th show of American Top 40) did it with "(Didn't I) Blow Your Mind", "Cover Girl", and "Hangin' Tough". They would all three be on the 10/7/89 show as well. Then, a few weeks later, the New Kids would do it again for one week. On the 11/25/89 show the Kids had "Mind", "Cover" and "This One's For The Children". Other than Diana doing it in 1980, I think these were the only two times it happened in the 80's. Pretty neat bookends to the decade!

In the month of August 2010, Kesha had 4 songs on AT40. They were, “Your Love Is My Drug”, “Take It Off”, “Tik Tok”, and her duet with 3Oh!3 called “My First Kiss”. For most of August those were all in the 40 at the same time.

Pretty neat bookends to the decade! Thanks for filling me in on the other act to match Diana's feat in the 80's. I really didn't think any act in the mid or late 80's had the popularity or momentum to place three or more songs in the Top 40 simultaneously; obviously NKOTB did in their prime of 1989. I really thought that if MJ couldn't do it in his Thriller period, nobody in that decade could do it. BTW, Michael Jackson did come within a hair's breadth of having three songs in the Top 40 the week ending May 28, 1983. With "Billie Jean" still hanging around and "Beat It" still in the Top 5, "Wanna Be Starting Something" debuted on the chart at #41. The following week saw the Top 40 debut of that song (at #22), but, alas, also saw the departure of "Billie Jean".

Neil Diamond also came close during AT40's first year: During the last two weeks of November 1970 "Cracklin' Rosie" was on it's way down while it's follow-up on Uni Records, "He Ain't Heavy...He's My Brother" was in it's first two weeks in the 40. The following week, in early December, another 'from the vaults' recording on a former label (Bang Records), "Do It", debuted at #40. However, "Cracklin' Rosie" fell out of the 40 (and the Hot 100 as well) that same week.

Prior to Ariana Grande, I believe the last act of have 4 hits as a lead act was The Black Eyed Peas, either in 2009 or 2010.
Also, Sonny Bono had 4 simultaneous Top 40 hits at some point in the '60s.
