John Grady McElrath passed away June 9 at the age of 77. He had been suffering from Parkinson's disease. He was behind the keyboards and a founding member of the Medallions in 1962. After steadily building a following in the South Carolina area and a name change, they released their debut single in 1965. It was their second single released the following year that thrust them into the national spotlight, peaking at #17 with their only Top 40 hit. John would eventually leave the music business, becoming the youth director for the Greenwood, South Carolina YMCA. His work led to John being awarded the Order of the Palmetto in 2008 by then governor Mark Sanford. The band continues to this day and includes John's two sons Shawn and Shane.
