Danny Kirwan passed away June 8 from unknown causes.
He joined Fleetwood Mac in 1968 and he and Peter Green were the major influences in terms of songwriting and guitar playing. He appeared on their first four albums including Fleetwood Mac's first UK #1, the beautiful instrumental "Albatross".
Danny's was fired from the band during the tour in support of their fourth album. Though he released three albums as a solo artist and supported several acts in the studio on guitar, his life unfortunately spiraled downward. Alcohol and mental health issues took over. His reluctance to tour reduced any chances of commercial success for any of his recordings.
Danny dropped out of the music industry in the late 70s, and endured a sustained period of homelessness in London during the 80s and 90s.
Mick Fleetwood posted the following message on the Fleetwood Mac Facebook page:
”Today was greeted by the sad news of the passing of Danny Kirwan in London, England. Danny was a huge force in our early years.
His love for the Blues led him to being asked to join Fleetwood Mac in 1968, where he made his musical home for many years.
Danny’s true legacy, in my mind, will forever live on in the music he wrote and played so beautifully as a part of the foundation of Fleetwood Mac, that has now endured for over fifty years.
Thank you, Danny Kirwan. You will forever be missed!
~Mick Fleetwood and Fleetwood Mac”
Danny's guitar work was featured on this early Fleetwood Mac track that was a Top 40 hit for the Rockets in the late 70s.
Oh Well - Part 1 - Fleetwood Mac
He wrote the title track to what would be his last album with Fleetwood Mac.
