After a brief illness, Randy Scruggs passed away April 17 at the age of 64. Son of bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs, Randy was a true legend in his own right. The four time country Grammy winner made his mark working with the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. He penned five #1 country hits for Earl Thomas Conley during the 80s, and Deana Carter took his song "We Danced Anyway" to the top of the country charts in 1997. With his dad and brother Gary, they recorded as the Earl Scruggs revue in the first half of the 70s. He released his lone solo album "Crown Of Jewels" in 1998 featuring appearances by Joan Osborne and John Prine. He earned the CMA musician of the year award three times. He also won the CMA Album Of The Year award for his production of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will The Circle Be Unbroken - Volume 2". This track features Bruce Hornsby on piano and vocals reprising his Top 5 hit from the previous year. The Valley Road - Nitty Gritty Dirt BandObituary
