Yvonne Staples, member of the family R&B/Gospel group the Staples Singers, lost her battle with colon cancer. She passed away April 10 at the age of 80. Yvonne initially filled in for her brother Pervis when he was called into service, but joined the group on a permanent basis in 1967. She had a wonderful voice, but opted to leave the lead vocals to Mavis and Pops. Yvonne excelled in the business affairs of the group, while filling in vocally when there was an absence or singing backup during their hit-making years. She also provided a guiding hand during tumultuous times. When Pops passed in 2000, she helped Mavis reach new heights as a solo artist providing vocal and emotional support while acting as her road manage for many years. We mourn her loss with one of the group's signature tunes, a #12 hit released late 1971 written by Luther Ingram and Mack Rice. Bruce Willis would take it into the Top 5 with a little help from the Pointer Sisters in 1987. Respect Yourself - Staple SingersObituary
