I recently listened to Rick Dees' year-end countdown for 1988, which was just a top 40. During the show, he played a medley of songs that did not make it to the countdown. Imagine my surprise when one of the songs was "Faith." You know, the song Billboard listed as #1 for the very same year. Anybody know the details on this? Did it have something to do with the song charting over two years?

Probably. I’ve always thought, and someone correct me if this is wrong, but R&R’s cut off was the week they would publish the year end issue, not 2-3 weeks before. And it counted just the year it covered, so the remaining weeks of the previous year just evaporated or, presuming they had already tabulated the “next weeks” chart when they printed the YE issue, it was all wrapped up in that one year end countdown.

Looking at the 1988 year end chart section of R & R--it looks like the year end chart was figured from the January 11th through the December 4th issue. So only songs that were on the charts during that time frame accumulated points and ended up on the 1988 year end chart.

On Rick's weekly charts of 12/12/87, 12/19/87, and 12/26/87, "Faith" by George Michael was #1. It didn't place in the Top 40 for either 1987 or 1988, but Rick has it at #36 for the decade of 1980-1989.

Actually, the time frame for the R&R Top 88 of 1988 was December 4, 1987 (show date: December 12) through November 25, 1988 (show date: December 3). "Faith" was among the Top 88, though it was way down in the 80s. Had the chart year started even a week later, it wouldn't have even been on the list.
What were some of the other songs in said medley?
