Steve Mandell passed away March 14 at the age of 76. He had been suffering from prostate cancer. He was a member of Judy Collins band during the 60s into the mid-70s, but is probably best known as one half the duo whose recording sparked a revival in bluegrass music. In 1973, their only Top 40 entry had its sights set on the top only to be killed (softly) by Roberta Flack's monster hit. The instrumental held the #2 position for 4 weeks. Steve was on guitar accompanying Eric Weissberg on banjo. The original version was recorded in 1954 by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith as "Feudin' Banjos". I believe this has already been mentioned elsewhere on the board, but "Dueling Banjos" was the basis of a classic sketch from the first season of "Saturday Night Live"-It was called "Dueling Brandos" & it featured John Belushi & Peter Boyle doing spot on impressions of Marlon Brando.
