Van McLain, guitarist with Shooting Star passed away March 3. He had been struggling for the past three years after contracting the West Nile Virus. Van was a founding member of the Kansas City based band. They were the first American rock band signed to Virgin records. Shooting Star achieved minor success on the Hot 100, charting three times during the 80s. The band deserved a better fate. Their music received regular FM airplay in the Chicago area. The band's first run was from 1977-1987. In 1989 the band reformed on the heels of a greatest hits package that also contained new music. One of the songs "Touch Me Tonight" was in regular MTV rotation and became the band's highest charting single, peaking at #67. Van would continue to be the constant member of Shooting Star until his illness in 2015. The band has been on hiatus since. Featuring their great single from 1982. It would have a 5 week run in the Hot 100 and peak at #70. When the band reformed in 1989, this song received another round of regular airplay on Chicago's FM airwaves.
