I'm shocked by the Alan Jackson response. Sure, if you don't get any requests for a particular song, to me that's more than enough reason to drop it. And if it's long, that's a legitimate concern too, though in the case of "Where Were You" the six minutes go by fast.
But the worst song ever and a train wreck? We're all entitled to an opinion, but wow! I thought "Where Were You" was sweet, heartfelt, and certainly thought provoking. I never thought it was bad. Wow.
And the one about the Eagles was a surprise. Sure, they're overplayed, and on multiple formats at that. But to pull all of their music at one time is a bit extreme unless the whole playlist is getting an overhaul.
I agree with the guy who had 18 Luther Vandross songs in rotation. Definitely trim that down to five or six!

When I read that the other day (before it was posted here) I was wondering how old they were because I was thinking that someone who was too young to remember 9/11 is more likely to write it off in that way than someone older, but I know a couple people with clear memories of that day who think it's a little sappy.

When I was on air at country radio in 2006-2008, none of us could stand that one or the Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue. And we never got calls for them either. That said, we still played them almost for a fear of some sort of backlash for taking them out of rotation.

Based on this article, just the fact that two CHR stations have dismissed Adele, it sounds like the first step to her being relegated to AC or Hot AC radio when her next album comes out, probably in 2020. I enjoy Adele, but the fact that her song "When We Were Young" missed the top 10 two years ago was an early sign that she may be an AC-only artist in a few years.
I always have and still enjoy Alan Jackson's "Where Were You." That program director who was so negative about it probably liked 2003's "Have You Forgotten" (Darryl Worley), 2002's "Courtesy of the Red, White &blue," and 2001's "Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly" (Aaron Tippin). The difference was that the latter three were belligerent and jingoistic, while Alan Jackson's song was sincere and reflective without being jingoistic.
