Flu complications have claimed the life of Barbara Alston on February 16 at the age of 74. She had been in an intensive care unit for the previous two weeks. Barbara was initially the lead singer of the Crystals. Produced by Phil Spector, they hit the Top 20 with their first two chart singles. Their third single failed to chart (the controversial "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)"). After the chart failure of the third single and because the Crystals couldn't get from New York to L.A. as fast as Spector wanted, he brought Darlene Love and the Blossoms into the studio to record "He's a Rebel" and "He's Sure The Boy I Love" using the Crystals moniker. When the original Crystals reunited with Sprctor in 1963, Barbara stepped out of the lead in favor of Dolores "La La" Brooks. They would have Top 10 success with "Da Doo Ron Ron (When He Walked Me Home)" and "Then He Kissed Me" Barbara would leave at the end of the following year. She raised her four children and worked as a secretary and title agent. She leaves behind three daughters, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son who was murdered in 2010. It's Barbara on lead singing this #12 hit from 1962. Uptown - CrystalsObituary
