March 20, 27 and April 3, 1982... "Spirits in the Material World" 11-31-34 "Leader of the Band" 15-32-35 "Take It Easy on Me" 16-33-36 I remember that first week in 1982 had several slow moves down in the lower reaches of the Top 40. The week after that, there were eight debuts on AT40 and I seem to recall that all of the songs that dropped out (surprisingly, none from inside the Top 20) fell quite far. Makes me wonder if there was some sort of computer malfunction on the week of 4/3/82. I doubt that those small drops would have anything to do with their arbitrary bullet rule. I don't think there was a computer malfunction. I think it was more of Bill Wardlow becoming bored after having done the job of chart director for several years and wanted to make it more interesting for himself. He created the "bullet rule" which led to all those songs spending multiple weeks in their peak position - but in 1982 liked to have songs fall off a cliff. All year long it wasn't unusual for a song to drop from the 20s into the 80s; or the 30s into the 90s. How realistic that was, I don't know, but I take those charts with a grain of salt (seemingly) like everyone else. I wonder what they really would have looked like if they'd done it based totally on points, rather than the whim of the guy putting the charts together.

Deborah Allen made a major move 26-36 1/21/84, but Baby I Lied stalled there for two more unbulleted weeks before dropping completely off the 40.

Flock of Seagulls climbed an impressive 30-40 on 6/18/83 but could only muster 4 more notches from there for a #26 peak.
