Gospel legend Edwin Hawkins passed away today, January 15 at the age of 74. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer. The four time Grammy winner and 19 time nominee crossed over to the pop charts in 1969, after Northern California radio stations began playing a track from an album only intended for local release. It was picked up by Buddah records and distributed nationally on the Pavilion label. Featuring the vocals of Dorothy Combs Morrison, the single sold over a million copies and peaked at #4 on the Hot 100. It won a Grammy for Best Soul Gospel Performance in 1970. Oh Happy Day - Edwin Hawkins SingersThey would make a second trip to the Top 10 in 1970, backing Melanie on her signature hit that peaked at #6. "Lay Down" was inspired by Melanie's performance at Woodstock in August 1969-That's where she made her professional debut.
